View Full Version : A recent delivery
I just crewed on the ketch Zanabe from Newport to Sint Maarten by way of Bermuda. I don't normally talk about my deliveries on here, but on this one we had a photographer who documented the trip (he's a great sailor too). Matt put together a photo essay, to see it go to www.cohenphotography.com click on "latest" and then on Zanabe.
Zanabe is a wood boat by the way, you'll also see it was pretty cold leaving newport. The guy on the mizzen boom is breaking the ice off the sail

Thanks, Gareth. I enjoyed the contrasts between the start of the trip and how things looked when you were in the tropics.
There is art lurking everywhere around us if we will open our eyes and look.

I can see by the tenth photo from the end of the album it looked like y'all had a pretty rough go of it.;)
Where were you that the water color was that stunning azure?Sint Maarten?

Did the photog have to go up the mizzen for some reason or did he just want to have that view?
Windy in Bermuda!!
Mickey, Matt could see a photo opportunity in anything, initially it annoyed me, but gradually grew to inspire me, I particularly like the shots taken in ambient moonlight. He took a lot of video footage of waves rolling down the deck, nothing unusual except he was lying on the deck with a waterproof"point and shoot" the videos would end with the camera getting submerged, it did not show that he was getting submerged too.
Paul, the beautiful water shots are in Bermuda, Matt flew right out of Sint Maarten, he had Christmas orders to fulfill. Bermuda really a photogenic place.
Unfortunately the picture of me relaxing is probably the because of the first twinges of my tendonitis.
Dave, he went up the mast specifically to take the pictures, and saw that as the principle purpose of the mizzen. There were no hydraulic halyard winches for the mizzen and rather than wind, we pulled him up "tug o war" style.

Ouch. Tendonitis on board must be a constant worry. Hope it subsides soon.

Beautiful.
Absolutely stunning.
Quite the boat!
A question from this perpetually curious west coaster: why do they transfer boats south so late in the season? I understand wanting the boat in the Carib for the winter, and north for the summer, but why not make the move in, say, October or early November. Why so late? It just wouldn't be done on this side.

Great photos Gareth, he does brilliant work. Thanks
You have to wait until hurricane season is over, so that gets you into November, and with this particular boat there was yard work that needed to be completed, and after that we waited a couple of weeks for a "weather window".
By the way, to all the people who are thanking me, the thanks are really due to the photographer Matt Cohen

Nice.......boat is about to have some electrically related problems as the RF fitting going thru the deck is not sealed and salt water running directly onto the connector is praying for corrosion internally. The entire fitting should be removed, cleaned, reconnected and sealed by wrapping the fitting and connector with electronic mouldable tape that seals onto itself....bad bad, karma.
Nice pix of Dorade in there too.

Right. Thanks. Forgot about hurricane season over there, and their potential to head so far north. It's only an issue here heading south of San Diego, so the local wisdom is be out the Strait of Juan de Fuca prior to Sept. 21. Then mosey on the coast, or loll around in SF Bay, or SD waiting out hurricane season. We had a lovely stretch in SD one year doing just that.

Grazie.
I made it onto the front page of SA today, Matt took this long exposure in the moonlight. I happen to be on watch.

Some splendid photography there. My favorite is the port running light - in color and then b&w.
If I had even a remote need for any artwork for the house or office, I'd purchase those two.

Hiding behind the mizzen?
For all of the horror stories of being a delivery skipper, or on a delivery crew, ... this looks so tempting. Thanks for sharing.

VERY COOL indeed! I was wondering how this delivery turned out. Saw the pic on SA today before I knew it was you and thought that was a pretty neat pic.
The horror stories, I'm sure, are much more entertaining than the idyllic ones, which would just leave the listener jealous!
