According to my Mariner’s Book of Days - what a perfect Christmas complement to my WoodenBoat Calender - today marks the publication of the first nautical almanac in the US, the Universal Kalander for 1783 compiled by Boston’s own Samuel Sterns.
I grew up using Eldridge, still out of Boston courtesy of Robert White, and am back to using it since Reed’s abandoned us. More’s the pity. I have historical loyalty to Eldridge but really liked Reed’s before they wrecked the coast pilot section and shortened up the astro parts in response to the market and then abandoned us altogether. Ah well.
I still have an old Reed's - for the coast pilot - and the Reed's Companion which, along with the stray bits in the Mariner's Book of Days, make for good reading when snugged down in the stark and dormey.
G'luck
