View Full Version : The entrepeneur's dream

I can't reveal the details, but I can't help but be excited.

It seems that we've stumbled across a potential market for one variety of our product which is completely and totally unserved.... and eliminates reams and reams of paper, to say nothing of wasted time spent writing information by hand that, in most cases, will never be used, but nonetheless is required to be stored. Right now, the customer base has NO electronic solution, whatsoever.

Even better, it is completely independent of third party software... we can supply everything required... and the profit margins will be higher than we ever dreamed of. The market is NOT so huge that the large majors will want to jump in and eat our lunch, but is more than large enough for a trio of aging entrepeneurs to be able to own.

The essence of the entrepeneur's dream: finding a completely untapped market, and having the goods to be able to serve it! :)

Well, it IS a lot like gold mining.... nobody digs one shovelful and pulls out a $100,000 nugget. Instead, they shovel for years and years, and end up, IF they are lucky, with enough dust to pay back their expenses and have a little profit left over. The worst entrepeneur is the one who thinks that their idea is a 'strike it rich' sort of thing.... the practical entrepeneur simply hopes he'll be paid back for months and years of very hard work.

Not a damn thing. I'm going to become a registered Republican, and therefore instantaneously become contemptuous of all you moochers and slackers who need a lesson in personal responsibility! :):)

eliminates reams and reams of paper,

must be something for the government. sounds good in theory but being something for government it won't do a darn thing to reduce the size of government , so I take youre dreaming to get rich at the taxpayers expense huh?

How about this: let's suppose, just for a moment, that some new product could substantially REDUCE the cost of some government functions, by making certain operations of government more efficient.... so that a government user of a product could increase his productivity by 50%.... would you object to that?

(Sorry, but some of our potential markets aren't government-related, at all... but some are)

Best Norm! It's fun working on your own except for two minor items:I hate the paperwork, and the cost of health insurance. I hope you make enough to hire those details out.

1) I no longer have to do the paperwork. In our partnership 'division of labor', one of my partners does it.
2) Health insurance is the MAJOR issue... and there's damned little we can do about it. I'm simply hoping to make a living AFTER the premiums get paid.

No problem.

If you choose that route, we shall form a committee to draft you for high office, and - once elected - you can start channeling government contracts toward Harbor Woodworks <G>

I guess it would depend on what that function that had the increase in productivity actually is. Is it something that should be a function of government or something that has come about as an aid to big brothers ever increasing beauracracy. If it is something that takes away more of my freedoms I think I will pass.

My father was a mid-level sales exec. with BF Goodrich. I had a conversation with my brother before he passed about whether or not dad's work provided health insurance to the family. I'd always assumed it did, but Bill was adamant that it didn't. Of course, that was a era when you didn't have to take a second mortgage for a yearly poke and prod.

Helmet Dehn, our pediatrician when I was a kid, was a sharp little Jewish guy. A good doc, though a bit stern. He brooked no nonsense. You knew to behave when in his office. My parents knew him and his wife Josephine socially, and he was a different person when away from work. Joe was a school teacher/librarian, and between them they made a decent living, though nothing extravagant.

I don't know, Norm. It does seem something has to change.

Best of luck with your new venture. That's exciting.

I was fishing for brook trout once and saw a spider fall into the brook. The current was sweeping him to the far end of the pool, where began a series of rapids that would surely do him in. He never, not for a second, stopped trying to get to shore, and mere inches before imminent drowning pulled himself out of the water.

The moral of this story?

I expect you stumbled onto this opportunity because you never stopped looking. Persistence in the pusuit of a realistic goal pays off.

You remind me of a spider.

I wish you luck, truly. My experience dictates having a solid lawyer and a war chest as if it is truly innovative a bigger fish will swallow it without a thought.
Maybe 10 years down the road you will get compensated if you can hang in there. Or you just may get lucky as a few actually do.

As an obama democrat you surely want to spread the wealth around. We will collect our addresses so you can send us our checks promptly. And don't forget to thank George Bush for letting you keep all that money that obama thinks belongs to him.

Best wishes for your secondary endeavor. Almost sound better than the first (but not as good as the mace/club.)

Oh, and welcome back to the dark side.
