Ok, if we can have an ugliest boat contest, we should have a most beautiful boat contest right?

Eric,
Thats a Dark Harbor 17 1/2. The image is from Diana Esterly's book "Early One Design Sailboats". Thats where I scanned it from anyway. The drawing in the plans set is too big to fit on my scanner ;)

There was an article in WB # 37 on that boat too though.

She's dandy, thanks for asking. Not getting much use due to a persnickity control cable on the port tranny...won't go into reverse. I've been meaning to start the "repaint the topsides" project, but haven't. This morning I spent some time in her bilges, trying to figure out the wiring of the primary bilge pumps...very confusing. The bilges are bone dry, however, after the work that was done last year.

Speaking of Fred Shepherd, in WB #173 there was an article "Surviving a Survey" that had a picture of a boat named Eila. It looked like a beautiful boat and I wish I could have seen more of it than the picture showed. Does anyone have more information on this designer? I assumed he is from New Zealand. Anyone seen any of his designs in the Pacific Northwest or have any pictures you can share?

I haven't found a good image yet, but to me there's nothing quite like a Fenwick Williams gaff-rigged catboat.

This is more fun thatn ugly boats.

I'd nominate almost any of Albert Strange's later canoe yawls. Here is a good example of "Wenda", which is skinnier and lighter than most of them:

http://www.yachtbau.cz/yawl/yawl01.jpg

L. F. Herreshoff has two designs that I think are absolutely gorgeous, Quiet Tune (now at Mystic, BTW) which I couldn't find a picture of, and Rozinante. The picture is of the Rozinante "Honalee" on a normal summer afternoon on San Francisco Bay. He'll be reefing soon, it looks like. I followed her into Berkeley Marina once just before sunset, and was astounded how beautiful she was.

Interesting picture of Wenda. Is that a modified rig? Funny, I just drew a 21 ft canoe yawl with the same rig. I used Wenda as my inspiration. That picture is probably the closest it will get to being real though. Any idea who drew that rig?

Bill Perkins
09-26-2003, 12:10 PM
In several pictures I've seen of Wenda she's been down at the stern .Just from the weight of her crew ?

Keith Wilson
09-26-2003, 01:06 PM
That's the original rig that Albert Strange drew, I believe, an unusual sort of standing lugsail. This boat was made in Germany following the Strange/Bolger plans pretty exactly. Here's the link (http://www.yachtbau.cz/yawl/), although it's in German. The other one that was featured in WB, Sally, was extensively modified - standard triangular sails, glued lapstrake hull, changes to the centerboard, rudder, and various other things. Still a very nice boat, though.

Down by the stern? Hmmm . . I wonder, did they add a motor? I don't read German, so I can't tell. It might just be that particular photo, though. I don't remember Sally looking like that.

This is Bluenose Class No. 1, built in 1946 by John Barkhouse in East Chester, NS, one of twelve built under the initial commission. She is now on permanent display at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax.

Greets, Leon Steyns.Leon, CRYSTAL is a near neighbour of MIRELLE; she is in magnificent condition - she has just changed hands, in fact. The family outgrew her. I know the new owner, Kris, and she's staying in these parts, I'm happy to say.

Here is a funny thing, though - she has never been gaff rigged! She was drawn for gaff, but fitted with a Bermudian mast whilst still under construction. She now carries a magnificent Noble mast which had been intended for a West Solent One Design - the WSODs have started racing as a class again and this mast was more of a cruiser racer mast and not competitive in the class so, without every being stepped in the WSOD, it "diverted" to CRYSTAL. The mizzen is original.

Uffa Fox is right about the accomodation - she is a bit of a "Tardis" - the mainmast being well forward as befits a yawl and the pronounced round to the coachroof beams gives her a huge space in the saloon, though IMHO the settee berths are narrow and the forecabin is a bit on the claustrophobic side.

Now, as to the most beautiful boat in the river, competition is decidedly stiff...

Besides CRYSTAL, we have at least two, often three, Albert Strange yawls - SHEILA, FIREFLY and NIRVANA. Then there is the rather stunning Harrison Butler cutter KEEPSAKE, whose canoe stern is as good as a Strange (HB was taught by Strange) and a couple of other HB's. Then there are quite a few Holmans - Twisters and such and a really stunning 35ft flush decked counter sterned 60's offshore racer.

From the century before last we have the smack QUIZ (1880's) and the bawley GOOD INTENT (1862) both restored by Frank Knights and in very good hands, the modified smack DUSMARIE - a very striking vessel - and the big smack PEMBETH.

And then we have MIRELLE herself...

I am of course hopelessly biassed!

Sharpies "boxy" maybe, all is in the eye of the beholder. In the water heeled and wind filling the sails... beautiful. Sharpies give the most for your buck, hands down.

We've got a long way down this thread without anyone mentioning William Fife III.

Maybe because we are talking about "ordinary size" boats?

But if we have included DYARCHY we can presumably include his "820" series - SOLWAY MAID, MADRIGAL, etc? Anyone got a photo?

Francis Sweisguth and William Gardner designed the Star in 1911. The Star has been racing since then. Sweisguth's hull design was genius. "It has withstood the test of time and the application of new technology to remain at the forefront of competition" (from Int. Star Assoc.). The Star is the longest serving, Olympic class, since 1932.

Now you'all take me back.

The FIRST big boat I sailed on was Dyarchy. It was launched I believe just before the war, and was owned in the 50's by Mr. and Mrs. Roger Pinkney, who I thought were ancient humans, friends of my parents, all members of the Royal Lymington Yacht Club (also home to Francis Chichester, Erroll Bruce, Richard Creagh-Osbourne, Commander Gatehouse of B&G, etc. etc. etc. all these sailing legends) and just downriver from the Berton Boat Company, and the now defunct Lymington Slipway, which my father owned in the early 50's.

I do not remember it being a "lively" vessel - just chugged along with all the sails up and I will never forget my first trip on this boat - I must have been 10 - 12? Down the river, turn right down the Solent and out between the Needles and Hurst Castle into the English Channel. I felt like I was going to sail around the world. And of course they welcomed all the child labour - this was not an easily handled boat - lots of lines. I had several trips, I can remember one over to France in my early teens - then it becomes a blur, I suppose they sold it. I imagine the Pinkneys died of pink gin and malt whiskey. Who knows.

What wonderful memories.

A quote from "Laurent Giles and his Yacht Designs" by Adrian Lee and Ruby Philpott.

"as part of the design fee for Dyarchy Roger Pinkney, who was an architect designed Jack Giles a house which was to become his family home for the rest of his life.
Roger owned Dyarchy for 22 years beffore selling her to Bill Batten. Since 1961 Bill and his family have sailed her to Scotland, Ireland, Holland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden. Her first ocean passage was to the West Indies, returning via Balaeric Isles. She was sold in 1982 to an Austrian, Peter Weisner, who now keeps her in trieste in Italy where she is well cared for and is still sailing, the centre of attraction" end of quote.

I once saw a nice ferro copy of Dyarchy, called Heptarchy (she had a mizzen).

Someone mentioned Fifes on this thread and implied that he only designed big boats. There are 16 foot waterline Fifes sailing off Anglesey http://www.royalangleseyyc.org.uk/Fleets.html .

Back to the reason for this thread. Much as i hate to admire something that Hitler once did. he nicest boat I have seen under sail (all that really matters) is the "Coast Guard cutter" Eagle.

I was'nt saying that there are no small boats designed by Fife. There are. But when discussion turns to "The world's most beautiful yacht", two of the usual candidates are MOONBEAM (80ft LWL cutter) and ALTAIR (87ft LWL schooner) both by Fife, of course. He is better known for his big boats.

The "820s", which he designed right at the end of his life (SOLWAY MAID was his last boat and MADRIGAL is posthumous) are 35ft LWL, which was a favoured size for level rating offshore racing under the RORC rule in the late 30's. That makes them big boats, but boats that do not, unlike the ALTAIRS of this world, need a professional crew. Some of this design series have not been built yet (hint, hint, anyone with money to burn!).

This is too easy, Nat H's(I can never spell that name) Alerion , closely followed by his son's Rosinante.

I suppose Albert Strange' Wenda in the running.

None of them terribly practical except as daysailors, but gawd, what an eye all three men had. And I think I remember Nat sailed Alerion to Bermuda when in his sixties. Open cockpit. I could be wrong about that, the sailing part.

Alerion is now in Mystic's collection. Twenty years ago I got a backstage tour from a man who worked there. Seeing her on her cradle--even though I didn't know ****e from shinola at the time--that boat exuded something. She wasn't on display, only had a stump of a spar, but gawd what a beautiful object.

She should be sailed again.

Tom,
Rarus is a John Seaman built version of the double ended 24' Gaff-yawl originally designed by Fenwick Williams in 1933, and redesigned (for Rarus) in 1978-79. She is 24' LOD, and 21'-4" LWL, with 3'-10" draft and a beam of 8'-3" +/-. Standing headroom inside with full galley, enclosed head. 10HP Sabb model G for power. When Mr. Williams re-designed her, it was primarily for the owner's request to have a larger cabin with standing headroom. To do this, Fenwick raised and extended the cabin top, enlarging the cockpit as well, by doing away with the coaming. When raising her cabintop the bulwarks were added to balance the heights. The interior is rather cavernous for a 24' boat, and always surprises people (including us). She's initially very tender, hardening up as she begins to lie down (though we're not used to it yet, and tend to get nervous when she's busy laying down).

Steven, thanks. She's lots of fun, though ever since purchase, we almost feel like we've been plagued with a strange curse, regarding the boat. Her survival of Isabel, sad to say, was a surprise (very pleasant), and we're hoping we can change our luck.

Magnum, the project to rebuild Saga was abandoned last winter. :( Still sad, but Rarus is the end result, and so we're looking at the bright side (I guess literally and figuratively, if the pun can be excused).

I will try and find a suitable photograph of Crystal to post up shortly.

Cheers,

I just love the lines of this ol' gal. Someone on this forum named Inka was going to restore her. Lost track of his progress.

I posted this thread over in Misc. Boat. Perhaps lacking in style, but she more than makes up for it in grace smile.gif

I am on a quest for a boat quite similar to this!

I'm a small boat nut, so for me these three are way up there aesthetically:

Herreshoff 12 1/2 (gaff rig, please)

Alden O Boat

How did this thread get so far with no mention of L Francis Herreshoff's Araminta?

HOLY %$#!!! MY boat is mentioned on a "prettiest boat" thread?!?!?! I have sailed a Townie for a long time, although she's apart for major repairs right now. She's a very nice boat, but in my amazed opinion not quite in the same class as a Rozinante or 12-1/2. Thanks very much anyway; maybe it'll get me inspired to start working seriously on her again. Here's the best Townie picture I could find (not my boat):

I couldn't find the original, but this is a damn close replica of Baby Bootleggers lines if not her construction method.

I stole this photo from someone on the forum, and I've forgotten who. I hope I don't make anyone mad; on the other hand I used it for a few weeks for my wallpaper, the sentiment is genuine:

That Lyman is a trip - in a previous life "someone" and I bought a 16' for $1000, tiddlied it up, drove it around in the water surrounding Vancouver for a couple of years and had just too much fun. I suppose he still has it. I moved on.....
