View Full Version : Christmas present quandry
Okay so here is the problem. You might remember a little while back I was having problems with my Hitachi R/O sander and I managed to clean it up and it works like new. But my wife all she heard was that I had problems with it and it works. She don't understand that it works like it did brand new, no need to replace. See where this is going?
Well she bought me for Christmas a brand new DeWalt R/O sander. I'm debating on whether or not to tell her so I can take it back and get something else or just end up with two R/O sanders and maybe sell the Hitachi on E-bay.

If you fixed it and it works fine keep it. Tell your wife that the old one works and that it would be easier to trade the new one for a comparable item you need. I can't believe that your wife would not understand the logic.

+1 on Jaime's reply...
Honesty is ALWAYS the best policy, especially with SWMBO.
Let her know that her sentiment and effort are so much MORE than appreciated, and that her perspecacity in the selection of a gift is nothing less than astounding.... but that a more pressing item would be...."the whatever..."
AND She'll probably accede to your expert request thus::
(let us know what happens!)

I agree with the others, I reckon leave it for a week before you talk about it so the emotion of Christmas is over, and all you are dealing with is a practical matter.

Keep it. Many times on projects I could have used two. I keep a 4" grinder new in the box for a back up because they generally fail at the worst time. Same for chainsaws
You never get the job done in time with just one.

You've only got 2 R/O sanders? Strewth... there's got to be at least four or five between here and the boat. As for angle grinders, I've got about 3 good ones (that do most of the work) and another 4 or 5 cheapies ($20 ones) that have the more rarely used stuff on them. I keep them set up with thin cutting disk, thick grinding disk, wire cup, wire wheel, etc. Much easier than swapping disks, etc.
Keep it...

I've got 5 R/O's, a 3x24 belt sander, a 1/3 sheet vibrator, a 1/4 sheet vibrator and a side grinder. Never too many!:d
Seriously Chad, put some 60 or 80 grit on both sanders and do a comparison test. You'll find that one sander will be more aggressive than the other. It's pretty handy to have a sander to do finesse work and another to grind the meat away.
Keep both and thank your wife. It's a good woman that understands a man's need for tools.

Okay I went out and used my old one for a few hours the other day and it worked perfectly. So I told the wife and she kinda expected it. She wasn't sure if I had fixed it to get by or really fixed it. So she bought me the new one understanding that I might have to take it back. I took it back yesterday and got a Hitachi Hammer drill for the same price. And by using the military discount I saved enough money to also get some sanding disc for my side grinder so that I can start on the inside of the 10' Pack Canoe.
