are there no Frenchmen, Russians or folks from other unmentioned countries on the forum?

There have been one or two.
One was greeted with "Speak English".

Maybe the French aren't talking to us since we developed "Freedom fries" The French have a long memory

Really? Who was so crass and asinine to say that? Got me. Stupid comment. Most Europeans speak better English than some of us do.

Can't remember. The guy's name went straight into the file and forget basket. Not someone I want to recall.

I can think of members from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany who are very regular contributors. A few from France and Italy.

I wish we had more...every Baltic Sea boating thread in particular has been terrific!

I was thinking of buying the same software until I saw the price. Very expensive but probably costs less and is more convenient than formal classes. FWIW I have heard good things about The Rosetta Stone program.

I read the forum, but it is hard to find a topic that i am interested in. Too much US-Internals. Nothing to complain, but somehow boring. And climate change, atheism, evolution had been discussed to death.

But i will read more of the bilge now. Perhaps i come back with some statistics..

Me too. My first university allowed me to substitute computer languages for human language requirements. FORTRAN, COBOL, COMPASS, and SNOBOL and I didn't have to worry about language requirements. Dumb rule. Should have done German and French anyway.

andrewe, indeed, i will do!

But I am ready jow with some statistics.

I took a short look at 66 actual threads of the bilge (hard enough). I found:

Generally interesting: 30
Non-interesting : 36 (local topics, us-internal politics, non-interesting in itself)

That is much better than my feeling was. Okay, i am back.

Been too busy on the other threads ...
I agree that the bilge has been heavy on US-Interna.
Kerry's "Folkboat found me" thread drifts off into general gossip at times, though!

And climate change, atheism, evolution had been discussed to death.

Your nation has outlawed the National Socialist party. If it re-surfaced under another name, and had a substantial following, would you be satisfied that it had been discussed to death?

I'm going to keep beating on it until it stops moving, before I even take a rest. After a rest I'll bury it. Two or three hundred years later I might feel like it had been discussed to death.

Osborne, you are right. There are some principles in our lives that are worth to fight for. Maybe I lost some hope regarding the US. Palin, "intelligent Design", tea parties and so on. Of course we have the same percentage of dumb people in Germany, too. But they are not organised since some 75 years any more ;-)

You have names for these classes of dumbness? Not bad ;-)

"Intelligent Design" has not much to do with religion. It is about the lack of ability to scientific thinking. The christian religion is about salvation from our sins due to the death of jesus christ. This has _nothing_ to do with science...

I do not if Sarah Palin has mental derangement. Her political statements sound like bad jokes.

And okay: Godwins law. I feel sorry that Nazis did what they did. And that this should be a warning and Germans are connected to it for ever.

Do you find it odd or alarming when a German identifies people as Dumb{untermentions}? Yes and no..Europeans have a better sense of what is going on in Europe, they often have a better grasp of history, the borders are like states ( you know what I mean there ), They speak usually several languages. Lots of differences. Nothing wrong with the US ( again you know what I mean) but except politically we are isolationists

It never occurred to me once to label political parties in other countries dumb or mock Grannies residing there or mock others religion.

Odd most Germans, Canadians, English and Australians cheered on by some of our libs here have a delight in joining in with a hatred of America.

I find it neither odd nor alarming. There are dumb people. Everywhere. And nearly the same percentage in all western countries. (It is difficult to compare intelligence and wisdom between different cultures)

Yes, i call the tea party movement "dumb". This has nothing to do with my nationality but with my experience. With "dumb" I do not mean "against my opinion" but just "dumb". Anyway, I am open to discussions and have only a limited knowledge about them. Tax reductions are no value itself. It depends what you pay the money for. If you look for the countries with the highest level of satisfaction in live, there are a lot of countries higher in rank and higher in tax rate...

I wouldn't say that so drastically. The problem is that A LARGE PROPORTION of the US population may be so. However, the economy and ever-changing situation in World affairs will have its effect even on that part of the population. I have met many US citizens who are politically aware and open-minded, even if I did not always agree with their view of the World.

DNA endures ... happily it doesn't transport political, religious or racial prejudices - or else the US population would still be shooting native peoples, keeping slaves, Europeans would be burning witches, going on crusades ...
It's only by ditching useless beliefs and prejudices that mankind has progressed.
