NEAT! Jay Benford just lives a few miles from me and is in fact working on a new project for me making sure I don't make any mistakes..
If you tell me the size line that you intend to use and the diameter of the sheaves that you intend to use I will draw the patterns full size for you and with the proper dimension bronze or stainless straps. Send the info by e-mail to my registered address......

Rope stropped wooden blocks are fun to make, either out of solid blocks or with laminated cheeks. It isn't rocket science. Just look at one and you will figure it out.

HOWEVER, since you are building a 45' "Colin Archer" heavy double ender, the scantlings of the blocks will be large. Frankly, I'd expect that to build reliable blocks for a boat that size, you'd do just about as well, time wise and cost wise, purchasing commercially made blocks. You'll find anything and everything you need in the Toplicht catalog. (Hamburg, Germany)

Bruce Bingham has a detailed section on making metal strapped blocks in his "Sailor's Sketchbook" (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/002-4213605-1736028).

David Goodchild discusses making blocks on his web page (http://catalog.com/bobpone/plywoodblocks.htm).

My two cents worth can be found at Duckworks. (http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/articles/woodenblocks/woodenblocks.htm)

With every respect to the Venerable Cleek, I think you could turn out a very substantial set of metal strapped blocks a la Bingham at a good saving over the commercial equivalent. Or perhaps we just pay too much for marine hardware up here in Canada smile.gif

cheers
