Money Woes Can Be Early Clue to Alzheimer’s, the N Y T
It turned out that Mr. Packel was developing Alzheimer’s disease (http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/alzheimers-disease/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier) and had forgotten how to handle money. When she tried to pay their bills, Mrs. Packel, who enlisted the help of a forensic accountant, could not find most of the couple’s money.
“It just disappeared,” she said.

I would want to know about it before that stage I think, Peter.

You'll be fine, it's easier to spot in the pre-decimalization generation.

True story. My grandmother was a country girl with a life long interest in "the Turf" - as an Edwardian schoolteacher's wife she had scandalised the village by driving to the local races in a pony trap with the vicar, who shared her enthusiasm. She outlived my mother by a few months and died aged 101. Her account with her bookie was in credit, but he did say that he had given up trying to explain to her that half a crown each way had been an impossible bet for the past 15 years - he had just made it 50p each way.

Damn. Unfortunately, this possibly answers many questions I have had lately. It's on top of an anurism though, so even considering this as a possibility had not yet entered the equation. One thing I have learned recently is that it's ridiculous to keep saying that life can only get better.

Does this mean we can cure Alzheimer's by getting rid of the politicians in Washington DC?
So if one fine morning you wake up with no money in your bank account but a wooden boat in your garage, does it mean you have Alzheimer's? :-)
