Just recieved a Travisher (traditional chair making tool) from "crown plane company" in the mail.... This has got to be the best solution for backing out planks I have come across.
Highly recomend to any traditional carvel builders

cheers

I had thought it might be.....I'd always used a belt sander to sand the hollow in the back of the blank.

Pelican,
Their are a couple of makers stateside - I got mine from Crown;
https://www.standardio.com/crown/catalog.html
Befor I got hold of this I was useing a modified wooden smoother that was too
narrow and had too wide a mouth and so would tear out the wood. The travisher is
wider than most planes and has a very narrow mouth opening.

Centroid,
I found them on the web and ordered online - no problems. This is the first tool I have bought from them and I will be going back for a Compass round plane in the near future. I emailed them to let them know how much I liked the travisher and the owner got back to me to let me know that he is looking at producing a Fairing plane soon. The travisher is as good as it looks, very well crafted.
