Damn, not again.

The latest issue of Wooden Boat just arrived, with the plans for John Brooks' Somes Sound 12-1/2 (http://www.brooksboatsdesigns.com/Somes%20Sound%20main/SomesSoundmain.html); a gorgeous plywood lapstrake knockoff of the Herreshoff 12/12 with shallow enough draft to really trailer. It would be a really good boat for around here, and I need another project like . . . well, I don't need one. @#$%!

+1
to the projects as well...

I enjoyed the article, the hull line/silouete/overlays were wonderfull a real fun way to look at the various hulls inspired by the H12 1/2
I was surprised how much the Bolger ply version deviated from the original profile at the bow.
good reading for these cool fall evenings.
thanks WB

I was surprised how much the Bolger ply version deviated from the original profile at the bow.I don't think you can bend a big sheet of plywood into that shape.

On sober consideration, that boat is probably too deep and heavy to keep on a trailer, alas.

that could be, what ever the excuse Bolger tweaked a little bit longer LOA on the same 12 1/2' waterline, it's got to have a little (miniscule) effect on performance... but thats what Hereshoff was famous for, building a little bit larger boat to the rule than the other guy.

One of my Anacortes friends bought the plans for that Soames Sound a few months ago. . . . .I think the article might be all that he needed to push him over the edge and GO! :)

We'll see!

Keith, I am also smitten with this boat. All the good stuff of the original 12 1/2 and easier for the rank amateur to build in the garage. I am looking for a real boat to replace my much used and abused Weekender. This may fit the bill nicely. Thanks for posting it.

I like it, and I like sailing the original 12 1/2. One problem with the original design is that down wind at hull speed, those narrow ends can result in a boat that rolls. This version might be a little better in that respect.

I have built 3 kayaks, lots of furniture and 5 guitars so not a rank amateur. I would build this boat except for the voiced concern about it living on a trailer because that is a criteria for me. I do not know much about boats so does anyone here think different than Mr. Noyes and Mr. Wilson?

I think the trailering concerns are only for the full, deep keel versions such as the original Herreshoff 12 1/2 or the Bolger plywood version. The Haven 12 1/2 or the Soames Sound ones with the centerboards are fully in the range of easy trailerability. The glued lap construction of the Soames Sound makes her ever more suited for living on wheels..
