“The Devil’s Trill” by Gerald Elias (minotaur Books, NY, 2009 follows blind and eccentric violin teacher Daniel Jacobus as he solves the theft of a Strad, battles the evils of child competitions, and protects his student.

Elias, a violinist, teacher, composer and conductor himself, takes us through the minds of a number of interestingly different musicians and the dark commercial underside of the orchestral world. I like mysteries where the location is a major player. Here, the location is a place in the soul and he brings it out wonderfully.

Even a tone deaf person like myself will find this book wonderful. For musicians I imagine it will sing.

Enjoy & G'luck

I'll pass this along to my music friends (if you like). Just got back from a rehearsal at Tufts!

Tartini supposedly dreamt the devil came to him and played his violin. When he woke he wrote down what he could recall. That's the story anyhow, I'll bet the sheet music sold like hotcakes and as for personal appearances.......................
