OK - I know it's days after it, but this is my first time with internet since the Festival. I also must caveat the "Easterner" part with the fact that I own a Seattle boat (though she lives in Maine). Now that I've made the sea-lawyers happier......

What a great time. Fabulous boats, great people & a great location. I got a few minutes to catch up with some WBF members, but the lure of a ride In Thelonius (a Monk design of course;-) to see the R boats & schooners race was just impossible to turn down. According to the PT paper this AM, there were over 210 boats in the water & 80+ on land, new records set for # attending (though they don't have final #'s yet) & even the police chief was happy. Must be we're all getting old or something....

I've attended east coast WB Shows in Rockland & Mystic & exhibited in Newport. I'll have to say that you guys in the PNW blew staid old New England out of the water. Virtually every boat welcomed folks aboard (much unlike Mystic, where we got aboard exactly 2 - though in Newport there were many boats inviting people aboard) & we had some great conversations with owners. Another easterner (who shall remain nameless to protect the not-so-innocent) commented that the festival bore little resemblance to the WB Show in Mystic, as this was about sharing the love of wood boats, instead of showing the boats off. There were so many boats that one didn't know which way to turn. Were they all perfect? Nope - but they were there - spotty varnish, partly scraped topsides & all.

I don't know what the entrance fees are, but I'm thinking they must be way less than the WB Show. Either that or wood boat owners in the PNW have a lot more $ than us back in the east! I sure would love to see the WB Shows more like this - though I'm not complaining - as I really appreciate WB putting them on. OK, maybe I'm complaining just a bit. This festival was just so damn much fun, that I wish the Shows back east could be a little more like it.

Thank you all for your great boats, the Festival & your hospitality. Michele & I have had a great week here (extra thanks to Lew for showing us around some of Seattle) & will be back (if for no other reason than to prove to Michele that one really can see Rainier from Seattle on a clear day). It was also fun to describe Neoga as a Blanchard/Seaborn & not get blank looks!

I enjoyed meeting you too, Garret! I've always wanted to go out and see the show in Mystic myself, but I have been told by a few others already that I shouldn't feel too deprived because the Port Townsend show is every bit as good.

I am a former easterner who enjoyed the Wooden Boat Festival immensely. It's been a long time since I went to one of WoodenBoat's Newport, RI shows. I attended the one in St. Michaels, MD in 1998 or something like that. It did not compare to the WBF in Port Townsend which is the friendliest boat show anywhere. I exhibited at the first Newport show and it was more like WBF in feeling if not in number of boats. They got a bit more commercial as time went. Still a good time. Small boat Journal put on some very good shows back in the 80's.

For folks on the east coast I would recommend the Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival in St. Michaels. The boats are less grand but the show is great fun because it is built on camaraderie. There is a lot of sharing different kinds of boats and after all it is autumn. Hit the show, drive to Maine, Vermont, whatever. See the leaf show.

Double dittos. Just wish we'd had more time to chew the fat.

The only disappointing thing about the show is the too quick arm bender at Bar Harbor with fellow Forum members. It was great fun meeting you all!

"Sorry! gotta go look at boats!"

Ah-ha! I shook your hand ever so briefly in the beer tent, but had a helluva time placing the name Garret. (It didn't even occur to me that you weren't from around here. And Lew just kept hollering the words ... "Tim! it's garret, dammit, garret, you know garret garret garret" at me.)

I've been reading your stuff for a long time! Nice to meet you again.

This was my first festival to exhibit a boat, and I enjoyed it a lot. There are two shows going on. One, when the public is there. And second, when they're gone and the party starts. I found both shows educational and absurd in their own ways.

Well - there weren't any cars banged up at it....

The Sat. sfternoon plan didn't work out as well as doing it Fri. night - as there were just too many things to do (boats to see, boat rides, etc.). The time spent together was way too short!

Context is everything. Of course, it was easier for me, 'cause I knew I wasn't from there....

Having a boat in the show/festival is very different from just being a cone-eater. I bet the partying @ PT was way better than anything we had in Newport when we exhibited!

Made it up with the fam, 2nd show I have been to, 1st was about 10 years ago, live in seattle but been at sea in sept last several years. My first impression was wow lots of people, much more than I expected. The crowds were a bit much for me sat not alot of fun. The boat owners were super nice, got to check out several. Sun mourning was more my speed. Got to meet Jay, saw his carving show. Don't think I would want to go again if I wasn't on our boat. Being at something like that and not being on the water is torture.

This was my first one (first WBF at PT, first wooden boat thing).

I was in some kind of heaven, and yes, I was very pleased with the attitude of come aboard. I saw one boat that was 'owner invitation only', and that really didn't bother me at all--I respect that. I didn't go aboard a single boat, but that's just me--I still appreciated the flavor that a generally open invitation gives the Festival.

Biggest thumbs-up and surprise: being able to walk in and out of real boat shops where real boats are built, and being built.

I never saw a beer tent, but I was able to find beer, surprisingly-enough. ;)
