Fingal Heads in a couple of weekends' time.

I have one big gas ring a little charcoal BBQ and a camping two small ring gas set-up.

There's enough room in the little harbour to have three or four boats (five or six even) and have a day of beer, food, conversation and sailing.

Who's up for it?

And we'll organise a Sydvegas git together on Grantala when Ian's feeling ready!

National unity my arse... this is another regional fiddle...

Where's the compromise? Where's the "meet you half way"?

Nelsons Bay sounds good.

Nelson Bay. Blurgh!
It was the haunt of spivs, urgers, touts, real estate agents and used car salesmen in the 50's and nothing much has changed.

You want us to cross subsidise you attendance at the EBS? Hmmmmpf... Typical bloody Sydneyite!! Expect the rest of the nation to subsidise your harbourside lifestyle! :D

One EBS now up here and one later down there. There's the compromise!

The Bigfella
08-26-2010, 01:25 AM
Subsidise, nah, I was suggesting that I'd meet you half way... or a bit closer our way, seeing this place is the intellectual, financial and recreational capital of the country.... unless of course, we can pop down to Fingal whilst a Wicked Weasel shoot is underway...

I'm gonna run this past the Minister of Political Affairs and Boat Building, BUT I think I know what the answer is gonna be. I think I'll be sitting this one out.
I have a head of steam up with the boat build and I dont want to slack off. I am about to start applying a coat of high build under coat and then the finish coats on the bottom and sides. I f I can get this job done soon I will possibly be turning the boat over on that weekend. I should invite you all down here and get you to earn your beer. A tentative launch date is Easter 2011? I have got the engine fired up, even though there is a fair bit of work still to do before that is finished, but, it marches, my friends, it marches.
I did not think I would get this far, so, taking the plunge and deciding to live the dream has worked out better than I thought. I will be thinking of you lads, Have a goodweegend and be good. Barney

Sheesh... my tent dates back to the Easter my daughter was conceived.... and last time I used the tent, I discovered that it doesn't keep water out any more, but it does keep it in.... it needs a new floor.

I just spoke to Dunc and he's the official organiser now.... he's working on organising Wicked Weasel girls and beds I believe.

The bike is ready to go... I just gave it an oil change and threw in a +80% headlight bulb (at around $42.50). I've blatted up the only dirt road I know of around here... which is heavily rutted... and all I need to do now is figure out how to add some dirt roads to the trip to Fingal. What a blast it is on dirt. Maybe on the way back though, I've got a KPMG reunion on the Thursday... so only have the Friday to get there. Must make sure I don't end up with a hangover....

Ian, definitely not Hay Plain-that sucks. I brought a friend's new to him Ducati ST2 home from Sydney back in March. Went by back roads all the way and had a fantastic ride. A lot more KM's but a heck of a lot more fun. So same game plan for this trip I reckon. Bitumen roads, but the smallest quietest ones I can find. Head a little south of east to start, then start making some northing around Warracknabeal, north and east up to around Dubbo, Narrabri, track north a bit more before making a final bit of easting to Fingal. I reckon I'll set off from here Tuesday morning, take it pretty easy. Sling the swag across the pillion seat and stop where I stop on the way through. Counter teas. Bakery lunches. Small town cafe breakfasts. My bike is a 1998 BMW R1100RT. Reasonably comfy touring bike. And yes, I'm certainly nuts, no-one has ever questioned that. This is going to be fun.

Won't be there either Barney. Think Anne would be OK about it but I'll be getting LOA later on for Hobart and a camping trip. I haven't said anything about it. Plenty of time later and plenty to do here. Even a boat to get under way. Sorting tax tonight and listening to a 1950's recording of The Barber. Very complicated this year, houses sold, bought and renovated, capital gains etc, etc. Never mind, next year will be dead simple!

I'm thinking you had, Sir... otherwise this EBS will be moved over to a BMW riders forum. As I just mentioned over on Oz Pol, there will be 3 Beemers there if Mr Sibley chooses to attend on his bike.... and what, one wooden boat, maybe two - and Mr Sibley gets to decide which way the house sits... depending on what he brings.

I'm afraid you're being too hopeful Ian. At this stage of the count we have two HTS16s, one Mirror, one, possibly two, Bolger Cartoppers and maybe one, possibly two, GRP boats. The Beemers will have to occupy the opposition benches... In the carpark! :D

Duncan, any thoughts on where exactly we're meeting up at Fingal? Is there a pub for lunch etc like Tumblegum or do we bring a picnic, eskies, chairs etc. I don't know the area at all or what the set up and river bank are like, or where the closest/most useable boat ramps are in relation to where you're thinking of setting up? Somewhere safe to pull up the boat and leave it while we catch up? Wives and girlfriends included I assume?

I don't rightly know when we should all turn up. Before lunch so we can set up, rig up, launch and have a pre-BBQ sail I'd say. Picnic, eskies, chairs etc is the general idea.

Here's the general setup at Fingal. (http://www.nearmap.com/?ll=-28.200513,153.564132&z=18&t=h&nmd=20100720)

You can see the large area of grass on the southern side of the little harbour as well as a beach on the LHS of the ramp and the pontoon. I hope that we can assemble a small fleet of wooden sail boats there... Enough to piss off the plastic stinkers! :D:D

I'll say, although it should go without saying, that wives and girlfriends are all welcome.

Gary's getting a big tarp organised and I should have a couple of blue cheapys to hang off the side and extend our Saturday land grab and I have a cast gas ring and small charcoal BBQ and a two ring camp cooker. I may need to get another primus bottle to power it.

Well I registered the bike today, and tried the swag across the pillion just to check that it fits. Its just a tad wider than the panniers and makes quite a nice backrest for me, so I guess it fits. I've also drawn some lines on a map, given myself 3 or 4 options at various stages depending how I feel and which way the wind is blowing. Looks like my overnight stops might be somewhere around Denilquin/Echuca Tuesday, Wellington/Mudgee Wednesday Warialda Thursday. I have some rellies I might visit at Lennox Head on Friday, then up to Fingal Saturday morning. Google maps tells me that's around 8.5 hours on day 1, 7.5 on day 2, 6 hours day 3, 5.5 on day 4, and a quick hour on Saturday morning. Total distance looks like around 2700km. I'm figuring shorter rides each day might be a good idea as the bum and the back and the arms deteriorate. Definitely bonkers, but what the heck?

Well those are the Google Maps estimates, I guess they assume a little less than the speed limit-not really sure how they calculate. I have to admit I don't ride like Ian-wouldn't even try to keep up with him:). I like my licence and my skin too much. But on the other hand one of the nice things about back roads is the virtual absence of voluntary tax collection points. I guess I find it hard to stay much under 120 on quiet country roads, but I rarely get to more than 160. On major roads its pretty much speed limit all the way. I like to stop every couple of hours for a rest and a stretch, like the signs say.

Hmmm, you've got 200cc on my R80 ST ! It likes 100 to 110 and that's really it .I've pulled 140 or so but it wasn't were it wanted to be .It's fairly low geared but fun on dirt roads ,flickable too .

500 km is about all I like to do in a day .

Phil Y
09-14-2010, 02:43 AM
Mine's much more a sealed road bike-I don't feel comfortable on dirt on it. As for flicking, I weigh in at about 75 Kilos, the bike I think is somewhat more. It likes corners though, I seem to wear the tread off the side of my tyres before the centre line goes. But that's probably because I live in the hills-not a lot of straight stuff to be had around here.
Phil

PeterSibley
09-14-2010, 02:54 AM
We're in the same boat ,I weight 70kg , the ST weighs 198 .By flickable I mean I can change lines in a corner ,it's not like an R90S...on tracks .Quite pleasant really .The specified top speed is 170 km , but I doubt I'll try for it .

The Bigfella
09-14-2010, 03:50 AM
Last time I rode my R90S, Vmax was 210. I haven't had the F650 over an indicated 130... with top box and city panniers on. It sits nicely on an indicated 120.... and a white car with red and blue lights came up behind me while I was doing that, without incident... so I need to get a true speed reading before I set off on Friday week to thread my way through speed camera alley. Its 820k for me... although I've been known to stop over on trips north at a friend's place near Maclean.... if I get a bit knackered. It would be nice if this bike had an adjustable throttle... but nah.. so I might need to fit an o-ring.

Phil, just wondering why you're going up through Echuca/Denny'? My family lived in Echuca for 42 years or so and it is a nice spot but it seems a bit of a longer route? Unless I had to specifically go through there, whenever I'm driving down or back from Melbourne I would bypass Echuca and I'd usually come up either via Albury/Wodonga, Wagga, Cootamundra, Young, Cowra, Molong, Dubbo etc ..... or up through Shepparton, Tocumwal, Narrandera, West Wyalong, Parkes, Dubbo,Coonabarabran, Gunnedah, Tamworth, Armidale, Glenn Innes, Tenterfield......then for you Lismore and Lennox Head. That road between Echuca and Deniliquin and accross to Finlay is long and straight and very boring.

Yes Dunc. Take the Murbah turnoff and ask where the local bloke is who votes Green - but has a felled forest in his back paddock. Got it.

I've just been working on the bike. New fork seals, checked the valve shims (one intake is just under spec... I'd do it if it was an exhaust... but it isn't)... new brake fluid, fuel filter, etc. I moved the clutch throw out arm around a notch and got rid of the clunky gear changes. I've got a throttle rest on it now too... nice. All I need to do is figure out whether I'll hack up my nice Kiwi sheepskin, or just double it up. I'll probably travel light... I've got a lot on so I'll head up Friday and, depending on whether I stop over at Maclean on Sunday, get home Sunday or Monday.

btw, just took the bike for a bush bash at a mate's place.... rock ledges and all. It's geared a bit high and its a bit weighty to be a trials bike, but I was very impressed with it's offroad abilities.

Safe trip Phil!

I'll aim to be home by 5.30 at the very latest. If either of you are still running late I'll pop a one of those red covered candles that don't blow out down on the driveway entrance. Don't hesitate to call me, though while at work I may have to ring you back quickly. As far as pubs to adjourn to there are three on Main Street to choose from. I don't go to any of them so I can't say which one will be the best, but the Courthouse in the middle of Main (with the taxi-rank outside) seems to be the quietest of all.

Saturday looks good here, and half the population will be propped in front of the tele for the GF. So I've reserved the day for sailing, first decent day for a while. I'll think about you all on the water fellers, hoping you are too.

..... re slowing down, down that way, the wife and I (pre marriage) did Renmark to Mildura on the R90S, including stopping for fuel in a little place that was off the road a tad, in an hour neat - many a long year back. I'd done one 60km stretch in less than 20 minutes when she started thumping me on the back, wanting me to slow down. I was keen to get to Mildura before dusk - when all those 6' rats come out of the trees.

I really did like the days of unrestricted speed limits out bush. 100kph is a joke. Frigging nanny state. Now I know what I want to talk to the next Premier about tonight.

OK - got the details on Phil's bike.... a '98 R1100RT. Now to find some fork seals and oil.

He's leaking... a lot, apparently

OK... early photos are in. This is the seal that Phil's blown

So... I'll get another pair of seals and bring them up... along with the appropriate lube. We may need some tools guys

Duncan Gibbs

Righto... A bit of housekeeping:

I have a cast iron gas burner and one of those wee Webber styled heat bead BBQs. I looked at the primus bottle and it's probably had it and I haven't had a chance to test run the camp stove yet. So more fire generation may be required. I've got a couple of spare cheapo tarps to use as ground sheets but some small tent pegs would be good to hold em down. I've also got a couple of picnic blankets. I've got one picnic set/esky combo and another esky and a few chairs in the storage unit. I was going to bring a couple of dips, some marinated chook to cook and salad stuff.... And beer! :)

Forecast is for an early shower so we should be good by about 10am for the gathering of the clan!

I just spoke to Phil. He's about to leave Wellington. I'll head over to Procycles this morning and grab some seals and oil. I had a quick look for info on how to change seals on a '98 R1100RT last night and didn't find anything. They are a telelever setup. We may need a couple of extra tools, beyond what we are carrying.... Peter / Dunc ....?

The nice lads over at ADV have just provided this link. It looks pretty simple. All we'll need is something to get the seals out with (screwdrivers will do at a pinch) and back in.... they look much larger than the seals I just replaced... but these ones can go on before the fork leg, unlike mine, so a large socket to knock them back in....

Motorcycle injuries and fatalaties are heavily overrepresented in our crash stats, though that may be influenced by the density of other traffic particularly trucks and the inexperience of many new riders.

The biggest problem these days is idiots on mobile phones... particularly the texters.

I didn't talk to him about that btw... we discussed a number of things, regulatory reform, the religious right, state competitiveness, the bureaucracy. I tried to put a beer in his hand for the photo of he and I .... but he wouldn't be in it.

OK - I've got the bits for Phil.... although if someone has a set of verniers just to check the seal size on Phil's bike on Friday, it might be a good idea - in case we need to visit a local bearing supplies shop on Saturday. The new ones have an id of about 33 or 34 and an od of 48. Seems small to me... but the guy spent a while checking it out with VIN number.

Shall do. I'm about to head out for a client meeting, then a KPMG reunion in town. I won't be home till late. I haven't packed of course... not have I adjusted the damn front brake lever angle. At least I got a quick ride in with a GPS... although couldn't test the 110 reading around here. It's 5kph slow on the speedo up to an indicated 100.... perhaps a bit more over that.

I'll head north at sparrow fart. I reckon I'll need a few rest stops. Lessee Bulladelah pub for morning tea, Kempsey pub for lunch.... pub at South Grafton for arvo tea... then Dunc's local for dinner. Oops... it isn't Vietnam, where it was a beer at every stop. Funny eh, I won't ride the bike here if I've had more than one beer. Rode flat out over there without gloves, in shorts.... not here.

See you guys up in that economically-supported zone tomorrow night / Saturday.

Duncan Gibbs
09-22-2010, 09:36 PM

I'm feeling a bit "uncontributory" at the moment, 'had a bit of a big week so haven't been able to think much about tomorrow. I'll bring the Hartley down and cross my fingers that I have everything there to get her out on the water, it seems a long time since I've sailed her and haven't had much time to check her over - it'll be nice to try out my new motor that I haven't really had a chance to run yet.

'Don't really seem to have much else prepared, a few sanga's and some fruit, a batch of nuts 'n bolts, some drinks, a few chairs, maybe a beach umbrella.......anything that you guys think we might be short on that I might be able to bring? I couldn't get a hold of another pop-top marque from work, seems to have been borrowed already.

Do I need to stop at the bearing shop for Phil???
