GOING to the bathroom could one day be profitable, a research team in Scotland that is studying urine for its potential to create low-cost energy said.

Doctors at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh were given a 130,000 ($225,000) grant to develop a system that offers an alternative to flammable hydrogen or toxic methanol.

The Carbamide Power System, which runs on urine component urea, offers a non-toxic, low-cost, easily transportable fuel alternative.

Research leader Dr Shanwen Tao hopes that in the future, the new system will help power submarines and generate electricity in isolated or remote areas such as deserts and islands.

"Growing up in rural eastern China, I was aware of the use of urea as an agricultural fertilizer. When I became a chemist and was looking at fuel cell development, I thought of using it in the process," Dr Tao said.

He added, "We are only at prototype stage at present, but if this renewable material can be used as a commercially viable and environmentally friendly energy source, then we will be absolutely delighted, and many people around the world will benefit."

Do the people at Anheuser-Busch know about this?

Of all the brilliant minds and huge costly research projects directed to address this problem - who whould have thought that the answer was seated on a highly strained bar stool at your local watering hole? :D

Cars Could Run on Whisky
"Scottish scientists at Edinburgh Napier University have developed a new whisky biofuel that can power cars, based on a formula that makes use of waste by-products left over from whisky production. They combined pot ale, which is the liquid from copper stills distillery equipment, with the spent grains used to make whisky, also known as draff, to produce butanol.

Researchers state that butanol can deliver 30 percent more power than traditional ethanol fuels. The research was reportedly based on technology once used to manufacture explosives during WWI and WWII, quedit.com reports."

Mine could be used as a fuel. The Saturday and Sunday morning batches are flammable.

About a month ago, our own Sir Charles Paladin pointed out that urine is a far better 'feedstock' for hydrogen-from-electrolysis than water is.

I suspect that 'Homeland Security' will declare that urine is a potential bomb-making material, and all patriotic Americans will be compelled to urinate into Gov't-approved receptacles.

Thanks a million, Biggie, but the major urine problem for most of us is that it may not appear on demand. When the old prostate swells the pipe gets squeezed and trouble ensues.
We don't need no "developement work" on oversized prostates. It is among us. I think those hagus eaters should get off the dime and do some research for the benefit of all suffering masculinity instead of trying to be another James Watt.

First the whisky and then the piss after: thus we might be powered by our purest pleasures.
