In the late 60's and early 70's I spent a lot of time with a navigator, learning the tricks and feel for navigating without a compass etc.....it is neat....but......cannot be done properly in a ballasted boat, only in a light multihull. You can use the star transit to hold a course, but you have to feel the land, or island.

My dad called me up to read me that article, and we both agreed that such navigation is as impressive a human accomplishment as any other we could think of. We are both familiar with the Inuit and their ability to navigate trackless terrain by subtle features, but agreed that navigating the Pacific is a challenge of another magnitude.

Humans are so cool.
