In early Aus the bicycle was known as the 'push bike' because in it's most primitive form sans tyres and seat it enabled an itinerant shearer or swaggie (tramp) to carry enopugh water to cross the vast distances on the inland plains.
(And check out the bike race, TDF isn't in the hunt!)
