View Full Version : Shaft Log Material

I need to install a shaft log in a 32' lobsterboat. The shaft is stainless, should the shaft log be made of stainless as well? Most shaft logs I've heard of were bronze, but is this only if you have a bronze shaft? Currently the shaft is running through the sternpost and a 6" x 8" x 7' oak timber. Also, anyone have a source for bronze tube/pipe in New England area? all I can find is brass. Any sources for shaft log designs?

Thanks for any info.

Use bronze. The prop will probably also be bronze and the shaft coupler mild steel....so put 1 zinc on the shaft and you'll be fine. Is the tube for lining the shaft hole? If you have proper fittings on each end you could use PVC bedded in tar to line the hole.
