Any preferences as to type of wood? We've been using birch mast hoops for years but I'm not very satisfied with them. I have another catalogue that offers mast hoops made from ash at similar prices.
Also how are you guys treating them? Linseed oil?
Ash or white oak are the common choices around here. They are soaked in turps & linseed oil for preservation.

Ash; bends easier than anything else I know, and very strong. Quite durable in this situation, too.

I can understand the facination with mast hoops but for a small boat robands are far better.
1. Cheaper
2. Easy to make
3. Kinder to varnished masts
4. If you make them with a toggle & loop , easier
to remove or put on
5. Lighter
6. Stronger

Thanks guys. I'll probably be ordering the ash hoops when its time. I have a brochure from TS Rigging in Essex and their prices are fairly competitive. Anyone else in Europe know of other possible suppliers?
Dillon we are probably a bit big for what you are talking about and we are a museum ship so our options are limited as to what we can / and should do.

TS Rigging seem to supply everyone in Britain, out of one small shed on Maldon quayside!
Hoops do have the advantage that you can use them to climb the mast, if you don't have ratlines. I use a lacing, but have often thought of going back to hoops. They are somehow nicer.

He made the hoops and blocks for Patience all of which are in good condition after 15 years. The hoops are ash, varnished and lubricated with petrolium jelly.

One of the items I have from the original TALLY HO is a mast hoop, the wood is Ash, dates back to 1883 it was used until 1923 when the boat was scrapped. It will be installed on my new TALLY HO II. smile.gif

I used 1/8 white oak, steemed and bent around a form and glued with gorilla glue. When set and dry, seal with West System and varnish. I will add rivits when I see signs of delamination. ;)

Correction: They are beech that I've been using.
You've got to be kidding me. I replace at least 3 to 4 beech hoops every year!
The new catalogue brochure I have is from TS Rigging and the price of the ash hoops is, at least for the smaller ones, even less that these beech things I've been buying. Even the larger ones are competitively priced.
Ian do you have an address for Colin Frake?
