SC ain't got Rock Shrimp! Gawd! I'm still trying to lose the 15 pounds I gained when Tonya and I ate Rock Shrimp and Blackened Rib Eyes every night of our honeymoon 3½ years ago in Fla. Damn! that stuff is better than all the shrimp I've caught myself here in a cast net(and I'm pretty good with my net)
Oh, I'm drinkin' cheap beer made by Coors(Keystone light), but I ain't here to impress anyone.

I'm fond of a martini, myself, can you get that in the pub? For Beer, I love them all, though I rarely drink beer lately. I love a true classic pilsner, the yeasty, bready, but sharp and hoppy kind. Urquell, some of the Germans, Biburger, especially.
But my true favorites are the american bitter ales, there's one by a little brewery called Dogfish Head, there's Hop Devil, I get lost trying to remember all the lovely fruity hoppy american microbrews. And I love their British forbears, good old Bass, Samuel Smiths Pale Ale, many more.
How about this weather? Where I am at, we just had a whole month with temperatures about 10 degrees lower than normal across the board. For a few days, we got back to just below normal and it felt like spring, but today a nasty front, gusts to 40 mph, and now the forcast says for the next three days, its close to 0 at night and rarely above 20 in the day. Nothing to those from the north, but thats bad for here and now.

Phillip, there's teetotalers by choice, and teetotalers by necessity. If its by choice, I would think a good rich brew of coffee would be enjoyable enough and would not exclude you from the comeradery of a good pub. Likewise if its not by choice. I hope I am never faced with having lost the ability to enjoy in moderation the convivial, warm interaction and bonding of a shared drink or two. I feel for those who are so faced with that.
A schooner of 50/50 (half new/half old...Carltons or Tooheys is okay) and a rump steak, pepper sauce, salad and chips will do me.

Odense, Denmark. It was about 25 degrees F outside, sleeting, and the wind was blowing the planes off of the runway at the airport. I walked into this place to get out of the cold and get something to eat.
I asked the waiter for an English menu. He kind of gave me this look of contempt and came back with a menu full of steak-and-kidney this and blood-that. I told him 'no, no. I need a menu in English. I can't eat that stuff', to which he replied with a big grin and went to get me their regular menu in English. I ordered a big jaegerschnitzel with a few of their local finest beers. This thing was huge, buried under a layer of baby onions and potatoes, all swimming in about a half an inch of butter. Served with fresh white bread. I don't think that I could even eat it today, but that day I could have eaten two of them. I sat there with one last beer for dessert, watching the fire in the fireplace, and it was everything that I could do to keep my eyes open.
I wouldn't mind doing that again :).

For the liver huggers (Tea totallers) we have every soft drink known to man, and even a few that haven't been invented yet (Esspresso jello shots anyone?). Sure it's a bit early here, but it's after noon somewhere!
Today we have a fine Guinness lamb stew. Fresh Rainbow trout, grilled, with Watercress/ Almond salad. and a delicate lemon sorbet (to cleanse the palate). Boiled 1 1/2 pound Maine lobster served with thick cut hand made fries, artichokes, and drawn butter. Charcoal grilled, Corn fed steroid free beef sirloin, with fresh butter and sugar corn on the cob, served with a Vidalia onion/baby spinach/Chantrelle mushroom salad.
While you make up your mind, I'll leave this basket of fresh olive tappanade and rye crisps for your enjoyment...
Nice to see those two old farts that have been squabbling sitting by the fire sharing a few pints and a laugh...

I could go for a Smithwicks (pronounced 'Smitticks' in Ireland). A dark ale, a little like Killians, but more refreshing. However, I' prefer it 'cold', American-spec.... not 'cold', Irish-spec, which is barely cooler than room temperature. OK, I'm not a purist :D

There's a nice boar's bristle dart board, a snooker table (As well as a pool table) in the games room, the TV with "the game" (Whichever you choose including the Cricket world cup, broadcast live from the West Indies this year), is right over the coal fire by the poker table. The barmaid in the games room's named Ida, and she's quite a good looking young thing, about 29-30..... Unfortunately been with her boyfriend (The cook) for the last 12 years... Fear of the Dark:
8 oz. black pattent malt
8 oz. chocolate malt
steep at 160° for an hour or so. puree in food processor, throw into the boil with...
2 gallons of water
1# light DME
1# amber DME
11 oz. dark DME
1 oz. challenger hopps
boil one hour. at the end of the boil add 1/2 oz. fuggle hopps. I had an initial gravity of 56.
Transfer to fermenter (3 gallon carboy in this case) and pitch with Safbrew S-33.
I had a final gravity of 26, which included 1/2 cup priming sugar in the beer. Yield was 20 bottles.
Katey didn't like it because it had too much coffee flavor from the dark malts. It was better after it had sat a couple months in the basement.
Dan
How's that?

And a bit of a peanut soup to warm me up for the goat that MUST be stewing on a back burner for those who don't bother reading menus.

Yes, Florida Power and Light thanks you for your brief - but well heated - visit to the sunshine state. :p
It's 54 here now and I might put the heat on 65 before I got to bed....yep, better turn the heat on - they say 37 tonight...That, I'll admit, is cold... ;)
Speaking of which - I can't believe I'm out this late. Gotta go. Someone can catch me up on Joe's "interesting" evening tomorrow.
Cheers!

Check out Nanoose's virtual yatch club thread...
So I was out at the Y last night with my sons - Spring Break from school here, and bloody cold outside, so they had energy to spare. We went for a swim, in the faint hope that by using their muscles a bit, they might be inclined to sleep. It worked, eventually. Only 1 other person there for the family swim, aside from the lifeguard. They've changed the pool schedule for Spring Break, cancelling lessons ... and nobody else seemed to have caught on.
The older lad, 14, now swims much better than I do. Oh, I could likely still get somewhere faster, but not for long. A really smooth, lovely stroke ... where in contrast, I thrash around and generally get nowhere.
But the lifeguard was more taken with my younger kid - who's 8, but small for his age. By height, he looks more like a 6 year old, though he's surprisingly hard and muscly (from gymnastics), with no extra padding anywhere. Nat was busily trying to learn how to do flips of the diving block, and getting pretty close to it. Lifeguard said how nice it was to see someone that size who's really competent in the water, and truly wanted to have a lot of fun ... they more often see kids being less enthusiastic or comfortable.
Was a great time - then home for hot chocolate, and watched The Maltese Falcon. Fun night!

Chicken wings.....
5 pc, 10 pc,15 pc, or 20 pc. Ginger teryaki, hot Buffalo style, or "OH MY GOD, MY FACE IS ON FIRE!!" extra hot Buffalo style. Served with a creamy blue cheese/sour cream dip, and Celery sticks. (And LOTS of napkins)
Spicy pork egg rolls with a sweet chili pepper sauce.
Chicken noodle soup, cup or bowl, served with a thick slice of Sourdouh bread (Where's today's bread delivery Jaime?) and a slab of your favorite cheese.
And......
Pot roast!

Lefty, what's that half model I see over there by the mantel? A better than average reproduction of a Herreshoff 12 1/2?
You got any more that you're gonna put up? I've been thinking about what George said yesterday, how Dalia is based on the old Nokomis, and the Thomas E. Lannon. Would be nice to get some half models up on the wall, and maybe a shelf of dreaming books underneath.
Yeah, I'll bring the lads next time - we'll need to have some nachos on the menu for the younger guy though. He's not much into wings ...

Nachos Grande with guacamole on the side, and extra black olives?
There's a bookcase just to the right of the fireplace. Hemmingway, Jack London, Farley Mowat, Among others....
And no, that's a "Flat fish" looks like a 12 1/2, but a little bigger.

I'd love to see a good sized model of the Gertrude L. Thebaud - that long knockabout bow really sends me. Up here, we see the Bluenose so frequently (and often, so badly done) that even her pretty lines get a bit cliche. Maybe we can frame some study plans too, and get them on the wall. A rogue's gallery of the boats owned/loved by folks who won't be joining us ... Ian Wright, Norm, Meer, Das ...

I'm not a Compleat Dummy (tm), so I know what "gronicles" are. But I've been wondering, how did this usage come to the WBF?
The only other place I've ever seen the term is in Spike Milligan's war memoirs (FWIW, among the very best war memoirs I've ever read). Did the WBF usage come from someone who picked it up from Spike, or was the term floating around and it was picked up by both Spike AND some ancient (lignophilic) mariner?
Enquiring minds want to know.

I shall have to look up a copy of said war memoirs, because, AFAIK, the term was first used here, by a venerable forumite claimed by others to be a member of the committee. But CRS has set upon me mind and I can't recollect which member of the committee it was. Not that any member of the committee would reveal themselves, anyway. But others here have better memories.

I definately heard about gronicles LONG before the WBF existed.
I suggest however that we should have a gronicle check room. When you enter the pub, you must present your gronicles to the gronicle check girl, who will give you a number tag. When leaving the pub, you give the gronicle girl the tag, and she returns your gronicles...

Hi, folks. Just dropped by for a quick pint (Propeller Bitter, please) before getting back to work at the College. Been burnin' the midnight oil for quite some time now trying to get my lab ready and writing up all the $%#^#%@&!! paperwork required to use any useful chemical.
Do you realize that you need WHMIS training to use Windex?!! Fer gawd's sakes, I had to obtain and file an MSDS sheet for rubbing alcohol!
Got the students to lay-up test strips of various plies of 'glass in epoxy and vacuum-bag them today. We'll do some deflection testing on them and similar sized strips of carbon and kevlar we made last week, as well as pieces of maple, pine, steel, aluminum, polycarbonate and polyelthylene next week. We'll chart the results to get a real hands-on appreciation for the concepts of rigidity, strength, and the effects of fibre orientation on these. Next week we'll build some resin-infused foam and pre-preg honeycomb core panels and drop bowling balls on them to test impact strength.
But oh my God! what a mess these folks make. Give them a pot of resin, a roller, and a strip of cloth and the result looks like those pictures of little kids after their first experience with spaghetti!
Ah! That tasted good...
Must run now - still have to make up a lesson plan for tomorrow's lecture on the proper care and handling of pneumatic power files and mini-disc sanders. Must make sure the greenhorns leave my care with the same number of fingers that they came with...

Special on the breakfast menu this morning, Pancakes (Flap jacks to some of you) with choice of powdered sugar and fresh strawberry jam, or butter and medium amber Vermont Maple syrup. Thick sliced bacon, an Indian River pink Grapefruit, Choice of Raisin toast, or Thomas' English muffins,(pre-cut) Moet & Chandon Mimosa (Or virgin if you prefer) and Droste's cocoa or coffee.
We also have French toast (Freedom toast for the Texans ;) ), waffles (for the liberals ;) ), yohgurt, Granola, Scottish oatmeal, and a whole variety of cereals (Including Lucky charms and Trix ) We also have real milk... You know the kind that used to come in bottles with the cream floating on top, that you had to shake before pouring?
Becks, Warsteiner, and Holsten certainly qualify as "real beer." I'm sure Lefty's got some in the vault.
But you're right, the beer choices so far have been pretty much weighted in the British tradition ... How about a few tasting nights, to expand the palate a bit? A German night would be a great start ... and for other sessions I've always wanted to try some of the Trappist ales, and lambic.

Yes but this is top-fermented beer - only bavarians drink that stuff. We "normal" Germans do drink it also once in a while, but not as a daily dose.
But what is needed for a proper bier is the proper atmosphere:

Time to plan that trip to Europe for Octoberfest.
Hi,folks. Quitting early this evening - it's 7:30 pm and I'm heading home. Packing up the laptop as soon as I finish this beer. (I'll have a Keith's Ale, please.)
Had the last of my lab big tools delivered today. Got a Skil contractor's 10" table saw and a King 6" belt/9" disc sander delivered, and had a guy familiar with it come in to do a thorough clean, repair & tune of my honkin' big Rockwell Model 20 band saw. My two 3-1/2" pneumatic high-speed sanders were delivered today, too. I love toys...
So what's everybody been up to, besides eating rich food and swilling beer?
Oh, and Jamie? It might have been warmer here than in Maine when you left, but that's been fixed. This morning it was -20C (-4F). Brrr!
OK! That's it! I'm outta here! Thanks for the giggles - maybe I'll drop in later in the evening after I make some headway on a long-overdue MMD project.
Caio!

Fcuk the Oktoberfest.
They don't even have boats there.
That's like going to a rodeo in Texas thinking you have a realistic impression of the US.

No offense guys and gals, but all the real patriots are hanging at the Green Dragon Tavern tonight.
Alas there is but a few Sons of Liberty left but if you come over I will buy you a beer and we can talk of important things in our pursuit of liberty.
I fear there will be few takers but it was a short number that were brave last time and I am sure the same holds true today.
"If ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall
possess the highest seats in government, our country will
stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin."

Sorry guys, I know I have my own enterprise, but you know how it is...in order to make a living a self-employed has to exploit himself.
Can somebody please show me the way out?

If I can drive?

While there is WiFi access here, we discourage patrons from actually engaging in work related activities. Of course exceptions can be made on occasion...
Martin, that sausage on the right, in the first picture is what I was thinking of...
Mssr. Mason, tell us more about your new toys please!
And excuse me Rev....... My pants were up, and I was just trying to help that sweet young lady make a difficult behind the back, long bank shot.... Now you got her so flustered and embarassed that she's gone to find her sister...
I'm thinking a nice Bloody Mary with extra horseraddish might be a good idea right about now..... Maybe with a hard boiled egg or 2....
Ok the Reverend is here. Everybody behave yourselves and Lefty, put your pants back on and let the nice young lady up off of the pool table.
By the way Lefty, you should have left your glasses on, she's not wearing net stockings --- you're snookered.
Now I've got the dray outside, where d'ya want these hogsheads.
I'll have a tunacolada while I'm waiting guv'nor.

Getting ready for lunch.
Hot Leek and Potato soup.
Corned beef on rye with a really hot horse raddish mustard available.
There's still some of that Guinness lamb stew left.
Individual Sheppard's pies, with a crisp side salad.
Sauerbraten und schwarz brod.
Chicken quesadillas with a mild mole sauce.
And finally......
Fresh tomato and basil pizza, cooked in an authentic wood fired brick oven.

This is more or less the recipe I use. I fool with it a bit every time, so it always comes out a hair different.
3 pounds boneless lamb shoulder, cut into 2-inch cubes
Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 large onions, peeled and diced small
3 tablespoons minced garlic
About 3 cups dark beer, such as Guinness
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 pounds red or white waxy potatoes, washed and quartered lengthwise
1/2 pound carrots (about 5 carrots), peeled and cut into 1-inch rounds
1/2 pound parsnips (about 6 parsnips), peeled and cut into 1-inch rounds
1. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
2. Dry the lamb with paper towels and sprinkle it generously with salt and pepper. In a 5-inch-deep Dutch oven or other large ovenproof pot with a lid, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until very hot but not smoking. Add the lamb in a single layer, in batches if necessary to avoid crowding, and brown well on all sides, about 15 minutes total; as the pieces are nicely browned, transfer them to a bowl.
3. Add the butter to the pot and melt over medium-high heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until translucent, 7 to 9 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for 1 minute more.
4. Return the meat to the pot and add the beer. (The liquid should cover the other ingredients; if it does not, add more beer.) Bring to a simmer, stirring to dissolve any brown crusty stuff in the bottom of the pan. Skim any film from the surface of the liquid, then cover, reduce the heat to low, and simmer gently until the lamb is tender, 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
5. While the stew is cooking, roast the vegetables: In a medium bowl, toss 1 tablespoon of the olive oil with the potatoes and salt and pepper to taste. Spread the potatoes on a baking sheet and roast, stirring frequently, until golden brown and tender, about 25 minutes. Do the same with the carrots and parsnips, tossing them with the remaining 2 tablespoons oil, spreading on one baking sheet, and roasting for about 17 minutes. Check for doneness by tasting the vegetables; they should be slightly underdone. Remove from the oven.
6. When the meat is tender, add the vegetables to the stew and simmer together for about 10 minutes more. Season with salt and pepper and serve.

hmmm ...
i had a leftover roast leg-o-lamb and here's what i did , same as above , 'cept the meat was already done , so i seared it with chopped yellow onion and then garlic , to this i added a good quality tomato paste and deglazed the pan with guinness , then mild curry powder and handful of chopped root veg , cayenne , garam marsala , handul of raisins , dash hp sauce (tamarinds if you have them) stew to really tender (< 1/2 hour) just to cook veg and then a dab of yogurt to finish , s&p , makes a nice thick british styled lamb curry dish
over steamed basmati rice of course
