Regarding the simple Gypsy "Instant Boat" design by Payson/Bolger,
Two questions, please:
Does anyone know the design sail area for this boat?
Weight of hull/rigged?

Thank you.

Hi Robert
Sail area [IIRC] 59 square feet.
Weight will be largely dependant on your materials and construction. It's a bit of a 'piece of string' question. The plans give displacement at DWL, not all up weight. Bolger's 'Instant Boat' designs are very frugal in their use of plywood, so you will get a reasonable idea of weight from the ply sheet count, and some simplistic volume calculations for the solid lumber such as spars and gunwales.

Sail area is 59 sg ft. It uses the "Universal Bolger Rig", also used on Teal, June Bug and a bunch of others. Payson sells sails for about $200, if I remember correctly.
Weight depends on type of plywood and thickness of glass sheathing, I'd guess around 150# unrigged with fir ply and average weight glass.
I built a Gypsy 14 years ago which a friend of mine is still using. For rowing, you really should add a small skeg. It's a very nice boat, and proof that taped-seam plywood boats don't have to be ugly.
