Hi there:

I am planning on building a rowing skiff and would like some recommendations
on which design to build. I am looking for a fast-rowing boat that can be
handled by one person but can also handle two at the oars. I am partial to
the whitehalls and am considering Ian Oughtred's 'Acorn' designs. I am thinking of building the 15 foot model. Has anyone out there built this boat? Are there any drawbacks with building the 11'9" version? Are Oughtred's plans full-size
patterns or do they require lofting? Can you give me any recommendtions
or suggest other plans that I should be looking at?

You might try searching the Forum by entering Acorn or Oughtred and see what you get. Similar questions have been asked before.

Don, I've built the ll'9" Acorn. The plans are full size and require no lofting. Oughtred provides detailed instructions on the construction process, and the boat was fun to build. The 11'9" Acorn is a small and tender boat. It's very pretty, rows nicely and is fun to sail, but I have found it to be barely large enough for myself. If you're looking for a 2-person boat, I'd suggest something larger.
