Saw this out sailing Carrianne today. I gammed with the skipper so I know the reason. Any guesses ?

I'd call it a catboat.

I don't know Jack, but it looks like you had a lovely day for it.

I'd say he got tired of broaching when running downwind under power in a strong breeze and waves.

The rig is a catboat. Full batten macaroni cat. My question is why is he wearing knee pads?

He's an old guy. Can't go out in the sun. The rig is that little screened thingie, not the sail and mast.

I think this might belong in the 'what were they thinking' thread

Steadying sail that's forward instead of aft so he 1) gets a bit of drive & 2) so he doesn't lose cockpit space to a mast? Maybe 'tother way 'round?
I bet those are knee braces/supports rather than knee pads.

No I overtook him even thought he was motorsailing. Look close at the stern. You can see the engine cooling water discharging.

Yes, one of those near perferct days. :D

It's a sailing lighter and is actually filled with gravel. The mast and helm seat are arranged so that it doesn't interfere with it's cargo carrying capacity.
It's surreptitiously dumping the gravel, mid Sound thereby making Long Island Sound into a parking lot, which is really all it's good for

What's that rig out over the starboard quarter? Is he hauling pots?

He's an old guy, and he can't get around like he used to. He uses the boom to hoist himself on and off of the boat?

I have friends who have been on particular medication which meant they couldn't be exposed to the sun.

Well, when I came abreast of her I asked the owner / skipper about the rig.
It was originally a cat/ketch. Age and compromise dictated that he get rid of the main mast and step the mizzen fwd. A lot less sail to handle. To accommodate his mate he rigged the "Green House" Now about the davits on the stb. side I'll have to ask him if I chance upon the boat again.:D
BTW he took his "rocking chair" to sea.;)

The davit is for lowering the outboard into the dinghy

Obviously this is a Reverse Mizzen Cat Rig. Everyone knows that the main mast is optional on a Reverse Mizzen Cat.
