Anyone know where I can find the following woods around Maine?

All quarter sawn

1) White Oak 5/4 and 6/4 rough-cut for frames, not more than 5' in length is necessary
2) Cedar , 4/4 rough-cut for planks, any length
3) Honduras Mahogany 5/4 rough-cut, 6" wide or thereabouts for coaming

I am in Bucksport, but would drive down as far as Portland or further if need be.

I know of a fellow in one of the Berwicks with a large warehouse of assorted South American woods. I have his e-mail at home and will post it later today. I'm pretty sure he at least has the cedar.

I wood go the extra distance to these people. They have most species and more.
Fairly priced and great quality. I always come away satisfied, and find some great pieces that spark my imagination for other projects. You might be able to set up a wholesale account. http://www.highlandhardwoods.com

Call Maine Coast Lumber (http://www.mainecoastlumber.com/) in Westbrook & York.

For the cedar and the oak, your local builders might identify local sawmills.

Hi Dave,

I could not find Day Hardwoods, but Atlantic Hardwoods down there has some white oak.

For cedar, you might try Tweedie Lumber http://www.tweedielumber.com/

I have no direct experience with them but I have heard good things about them

I just got off the phone with Bruce at Tweedie's in Thorndyke, ME. I will probably be over there tomorrow to purchase 80 bf cedar planking.

By the way, I DID go to Portland yesterday and bought $450-worth of white oak and Philippine Mahogany from Atlantic Hardwoods on Congress Street. They are pretty nice folks but I have not purchased wood before and wonder if I paid the fair price for it. If anyone's interested, I will locate the price list.

Sounds like you've got it taken care of. For future reference, though, here's the Thomas page for this heading. When I was doing architectural millwork in New England, we used Black Mountain very happily... but that was years ago. I have no idea how they are now.

Watcha building?

Hi Sailboy3,

I am restoring a 1962, 19-foot all-wood day sailer which, if I am not mistaken was built from a set of plans found in a Popular Science, or Popular Mechanic magazine from that era.

The boat sat under a tree in Milinocket, Maine since 1984. The whole bottom is completely gone, and there was a tree growing through it.

Black Mountain has been gone for years. I buy from Atlantic Hardwoods 'cause I'm friends with the owner and work for them sometimes building staircases and balustrades.

Steven,

I'm sorry to hear it. I found Black Mtn. to have good prices, good stock, and be a real treat to work with. They were always up for oddball requests from oddball shops (like ours).
