I read an interesting article about the work of Reinhard Strey and his efforts to reduce pollution from diesel engines by creating a stable emulsion of water and diesel fuel using oleic acid and certain amines.

Who would have guessed?
The soot is eliminated and oxides of nitrogen are reduced by 80%.
