Sure do. And one makes a cameo in that James Coburn classic, "The President's Analyst."

We did some restoration work on one about 6-7 years ago, quite a clever little rig! We, of course, were replacing rusty panels! :D The owner had had it for some time, and used it regularly during the summer- it really liked calm water, with large boat wakes causing serious concern. I imagine it would sink like the proverbial stone if swamped- don't remember any kind of flotation.

I have actually ridden in one. Very very cool. I saw it in a parking lot of a restaurant on the Mullica River near the Jersey shore. Being a sucker for any antique car, I was admiring it when the owner walked up. He told me the story of it and how he got it, then asked if I would like a ride. We went round the block, then he told me to pull a lever at the base of the door. I did and he drove the thing straight down the boat ramp and into the Mullica, causing a rather large wave to roll up the hood and break on the windshield. :D We boated around for a few minutes and he drove back up the ramp, a tricky maneuver considering the tidal current was flowing crosswise to the ramp. It boated nicely, but it did seem that it could easily swamp in rough water IF the top and windows were down. Then again, you would not put the top and windows down in rough water, would you? Of course in the goofy state of New Jersey, the poor guy has to register the thing as both a car AND a boat, requiring both fees as well as license plates on the bumpers and registration numbers on the front fenders.

Hi,

Sort of following this thread. Here in America's dairyland we have a tourist attraction called Wisconsin Dells. They offer rides there on the Wisconsin river using world war 2 DUCKS for mode of transportation.

Bob V.

Have also seen a guy with ebay handle of amphicar, bidding on old car compasses

There was a used car dealer in Coventry R.I. that had two of them ,more for promotion. We would see him out in Lake Tiouge every summer. I I haven't seen them in a few years but I'll bet they are still around.

Those Ducks a available in Boston for tourist rides in the Charles River. It's funny to see those big amphibs in the narrow streets.

There's one here in Seattle. The guy had been using it for years before he got stopped on the water and told he had to have Washington vessel registration numbers on the bow.

I work in TV news and our station did a story on one of those last summer. Matter a' fact I believe the owner is the head honcho of the amphy club nationaly. Drove it straight into the Ohio River with the authority of a suicide attempt. God knows how many 911 calls he generates. The guy who shot it said it didn't leak a drop. The front wheels serve as the rudder. Pretty cool but I couldn't help but think of the fear of watching a Bayliner wake come towards you. Better have the top down for easy egress, 'cause it's sinkin' like a rock. Still pretty cool. Dan.
