Does anyone know of any books or plans for the Boats in that article from a couple of issues ago named Noordsblat. I went to the website but It's all norwegian. I saw those boats and I absoultely fell in love with them. I think they are a traditional norwegian fishing boat of some sort. Anyways I want one really bad. So if anyone has any info It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Alot, Jess

Hehe I went to that website too and sadly it's in some weird language. Sorry I can't help you I guess you'll have to find someone that speaks norwegian.

It's my understanding that the boats are mostly built by eye by the chosen few to whom the art and magic has been passed along to. I doubt that you find anything approaching plans where the boats are built.

Ah, my C.R.S. is in remission today. Somewhere in Washington State a group of Norwegian descended fellows built one of these boats. Check the Mother of all Maritime Links-and pictures from Depot Bay Wooden Boat Festival.

Cheers!

I've never built a lapstrake boat before but I think I have the general idea. I think That I will try it by eye as well. I figure if I build the keel and work up from there it should go ok, any hints? Jess

What kind of wood should I use? Are there anybooks that could be of some help? I also noticed that I spelled Nordensblat wrong, whoops. Thanks , Jess

Jess which site would that be?

This one of Axel Gustafssons here (http://surf.to/boat.design/) or this of Bertil Anderssons here (http://hem.passagen.se/bertil.andersson/se/index_se.htm)?

Or have you found yet another?? :D gawd strewth PLEASE dont say you have!!! I couldnt stand it!

If its Bertils page your talking about email them and include in your message the number of the boats your interested in and they will translate it for you and do a price converstion which will include freight to your door. very fast as well! Ive contacted them several times over a couple of their plans and they have always been real fast and helpful... dont worry about the English > Sweedish thing Ive found that most can speak both over there.

Another way of getting an answer on a particular boat that you like is to post it here as we have a fair number of European boatbuilders etc come on and they will translate it for you... sorta like so...

"Hey guys Im interested in this boat but Ive got no bloody idea what the heck theyre saying on their site can someone interpret for me? the page says...

Nr Båttyp Pris
1 BLEKINGSEKA
15 fot. Längd 4600, bredd 1430 mm. Troligen byggd på 1890-talet av Ola Jonasson i Truseryd, Blekinge. Helt i ek. Utritad med segel som är för stort, men som användes till ekan. 2 ritningsblad i skala 1:10, konstruktion, spant, segel. Uppmätning nr 1. 1966. 200 SEK

Whats that mean?? the pic shows so...

http://hem.passagen.se/bertil.andersson/common/images/boatplans/1_small.jpg

and the porn... errr info is here on this site...
Bertil Andersson (http://hem.passagen.se/bertil.andersson/se/index_se.htm)

see and someone will truck on in and translate for you and you can go from there but the links help to clarify for everyone the site your looking at and the information you cant understand.

Easy as eh? good luck! ;)

edited to say... bloody pic wont show! sorry about that but you can get the idea eh?!

This is the boat I was talking about yesterday. The folks responsible are a lot closer than Norway.

More pictures and information here:

Sons of Norway Nordslandbot (http://www.boat-links.com/DepoeBay/00/BoatFest-3.html)

As for materials, I would think that traditional west coast lumber like Douglas-fir and Alaskan yellow or Port Orford cedar would be perfect.

You may want to contact a fellow in Anacortes, Washington (home of Flounder Bay Boat Lumber) by the name of Jay Smith. I think--CRS, ya know. Any PNEBS members want to correct me? He learnt his boatbuilding in Scandihoovia and builds some right nice nordic boats. He's often seen in Port Townsend at the festival.

Jess
WoodenBoat series book "Planking and Fastening" has a chapter on building a similar type of boat. No molds, just a bevel gauge to determine the lap and strake angle and shores from the ceiling to keep things in place until its all fastened. Sounds tricky without really good instructions or someone to show you.

Jess, have you seen Malcolm Henry's site about the building of Spark? Unbelievably cool. :D

Spark (http://www.qei.co.uk/spark/)

I'm building a Hardanger Faering with my 13 year old son, Gavin. Check out the ELF thread.

I'd like to thank you Steve. I looked at your thread "ELF" and decided to go with the Whilly Boat. It looks easy enough for me so I think I will stick with that, anyone built? Thanks again, Jess

Jess, Nick Grainger, owner of the Caledonia Yawl Crazybird has a site with several forums about Iains designs. Go to here (http://www.mavc2002.com/caledoniayawl/) and then click discussions. Goodluck, lots of other builders of Whilly boats. Steven
