Wow, that's a lot of deep reef points! That boat will go anywhere in any weather.

Noice!

I like the boat and I like the sails. The vertical panels look sweet!

She's stoutly built, too. I heard you'd taken pics, Dave, very nice to see them. That was Acacia's shakedown cruise for the season. Talisman is still in the driveway. :(

V&S have more of the photos and perhaps they'll post some as well.

Yes they are sails by Nat Wilson! We collaborated for about two years to get what we wanted. The material is Oceanus cloth, made to look and feel like new cotton. They are rugged. We like that deep reef, as Nat said when we picked up the new suite, "Go find some wind". We like options for setting sail and also have a storm jib to boot. Yes the vertical panels are traditional and look the part. Thanks for all the interest!

You just need a club topsail now. <smile>

A topsail would certainly put a cap on her! I have never had to tack one, and from reading about it I am not sure it would be worth it, but it would sure look pretty sporty.

Forgot to mention how well the sails have improved her abilities at all points of sail. Nat is a genius.
Gareth, I have agonized over a topsail arrangement, but I don't think I want the extra gear. We have a large drifter and a large light air jib.
Though when we had the mast out this year I added another strop to add a halyard for a jib tops'l or running dual mules. All of my jibs are on wire luffs, unhanked.

[QUOTE=bamamick;2611502]A topsail would certainly put a cap on her! I have never had to tack one.

I have had experience with a tops'l on Jenny Ives a gaff ketch, it was simple to set and self tacking, though she had a topmast.

Self-tacking sounds good. I had read where someone actually had to go up and tack the topsail? Does that sound right?

You have to understand that I have been primarily just a racing sailor in my lifetime. I don't have much in the way of experience with traditional designs, outside of 'traditionally' designed racing boats like Stars and Dragons.

Tops'l on your boat would be self tending. Whether a "1 stick" or "2 stick" If you get to it someday, rig it so you set it (and strike it) while on stbd. tack. This way, you have the right of way while messing with it,'specially handy if your alone.

I was being somewhat facetious about the topsail.

Mickey the one I played with, you tacked from deck, the sail set to leeward of the peak halyard and to windward of the gaff. That was pretty easy, there were two tack downhauls. The sheet which was effectively a clew outhaul, was a pain in the butt, because it ran up and down the gaff, so you had to tend it when hoisting and striking the main.

There used to be a guy in Tortola and at Foxy's, maybe WizBang knows him, who had a complete windsurfer rig as a topsail, that always struck me as an idea with potential.

Maybe we can get together sometime this Summer and you can see how I set SEA HARMONY's topsail. Would do you good. I plan to be at Eggemoggin and along the coast the first two weeks of August. Then there is here. Cell, 617-8343915. thaddanielson@comcast.net

Gareth,

Re windsurfer rig topsail idea- Chesapeake Bay racing log canoes (ketch rigs) set lateen sails like a Sunfish's rig as main topsails. I posted a photo of one with a square topsail here somewhere also. Massive canvas boost!
