Hi -

I have a friend who just got a neat old boat. Launched originally in 1939, it's a Hacker-like 20 footer with double cockpit & has a Scripes (?) marinized Ford Flathead V8 with Maxim 3-M3 silencers. Yes, yes - I'll get some pics! :p Don't have any right now though.

1 of the silencers is rotted out & he's looking for a replacement. The exhaust (except for the silencer) is all 1 1/2" bronze pipe - flanged where the silencer attaches. The silencer has 2 water injection hookups coming from the manifold.

Anyone have any ideas? I'll try to get more info - particularly a pic of it.

Thanks!

a maxim silencer is the same as any water cooled muffler system...what's the problem?

Vernalift mufflers (http://www.centekindustries.com/product_descriptions.html)

Fisherie's Supply (http://www.fisheriessupply.com/productgroupdetail.aspx?cid=7705&did=7702&page=2)

The standard in off-the-shelf marine silencers, Verna-Tone are in-line, Verna-Lift (used to be called Aqua-Lift) are for applications with more available space. Very durable and effective products.

No problem, except that he was considering trying to keep her original.

Thanks. He knows modern mufflers are an option - but as I replied to Chuck, he'd hoped to keep it original. Probably not gonna happen though....

Nobody will care. If he mounts it in an impossibly inaccessible place in line:eek:, nobody will even see! Wouldn't original be un-muffed?

Nope - these are original. He bought it from a man who was 8 when he went on the boat's maiden voyage & is familiar with virtually every aspect of it.

There are accessible places to mount a muffler? ;) Wish I had that on my boat....

Oh, a muffler!
I had an image of a Maxim machine gun with a silencer and wondered now what?
If the look is important, why not make one or have it made - or make 2 if they need, for god knows what reason, to look identical.

I knew someone would conjur that image. Too much time in the Bilge? ;) These original mufflers say "Maxim Silencer" right on them.

Yah - they certainly could be made - but with the resources on this forum, I figured it'd be silly not to ask first.

Old Hiram was a smart dude...as was his daddy. His father invented the Maxim Machine gun, among other things, Hiram did the auto and firearms silencer and a lotta other things, and was the patron saint of Ham radio operators when he founded the ARRL (American Radio Relay League in 1909. He's buried not far from here. His daughter Percy Maxim Lee was the first pres of the League of women voters and an appointee by John Kennedy to the Consumer Advisory Council, and as I recall hosted debates with Sen McCarthy.

I have a pair of Vernalifts and I can almost reach them if I am held by my ankles and suspended just so. Finding just the right person to hold me by my ankles? Not so easy!

God (or weasels) help me if they ever go gunny sack! But they are extremely durable. They do have a custom build program, if you check their website, but I am almost certain they will still be made from glass and not...whatever.
