Wondering if anyone know where I might be able to get 5-10 lbs of caulking oakum on Long Island today/tomorrow for a couple seems I am caulking in one of our wooden boats?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Pretty good size boat if you're using oakum (?)
Oakum is used after, and on top of cotton, which means that the planking needs to be typically more than 1" (usually about 1 1/4") thick before you are using oakum. Anything thinner is just cotton.

Yup...the cotton is already in and I would hate to burn through a ton of it when oakum is really what I need at this point.

I've seen plumber's oakum. I don't know if it will serve.

UPS and FEDEX are your friends. Try Hamilton Marine, Jamestown, other mail order houses etc.

Hmm, ok then, what'cha caulking, you've got my curiousity? As for where to find oakum, sorry I don't have a direct answer. I think I'd give the DuPont shipyard at Mystic Seaport a call and find out where they get it from. I'd bet they are one of the more significant users in the N.E.

Thanks for everyone's input. I have ordered oakum from Hamilton and others in the past. I only had a few feet of seam to recaulk on a 1965 Pacemaker that we have here at the Academy that was out for bottom paint. It's planked in mahogany. Didn't really want to spend a fortune on express shipping for little material. Just was hoping that someone had some kicking around.
