Let's face it, awnings are shippy. I always wanted one - just like the big boys...

Ultra low-tech...

I thought it would be sloppy but it's tight as a drum.

An elegant awning and an elegant boat . What's the boat?

Elegant...I like that. She's an Alaska designed by Don Kurylko.

The canvas is a sunbrella-like material (can't remember the name) and the wood is cedar.

Think rain-catcher...

That'll do! Have you figured out the stowage part of it? Will the long poles lay on the floor alright or will it just nestle up against the gunwhale at thwart hieght?

They'll just lay on "deck" with the sails and other sticks...

I see the canvas is sandwiched in between the side sticks and screwed together. Did you use an adhesive there as well? It does look like it will work well. To me it fairly screams afternoon picnics and cold beer.

I had some Titebond III from a uke build that never happened - says it's waterproof, we'll see.

Sea trials yesterday. We rowed and sailed with the mizzen set and the awning up for most of the day. What an amazing difference under the awning. It actually feels like a cool breeze is blowing. It doesn't seem to affect the sailing either (although with just the mizzen set aft I don't expect much) we usually row/sail in light air anyway just to keep moving. Heaving to worked well, with the only difference being the boat fore-reaching rather than the usual head up and fall off behaviour. The setup didn't seem to interfere with the mizzen snotter and the mizzen can still be released past 90 degrees to spill the wind, though I'd strike the awning long before the wind picked up.

It's pretty cool when a prototype works out well on the first try.:D

Can you give us some scale? How big is the boat, how big is the awning? Beautiful.

Prepare to reef the awnsl'!

Oh goody - a new command to hurl at my wife!

Thanks, Peter.

TimmS: she's 18 feet by 4.5 beam. The awning is 5 feet by 7 feet and leaves about 6 inches of headroom when rowing.

How did I miss this thread. Nice job on the awning and lovely boat. Did you build the boat? She's very nice. I think you need to do a build thread.:D

Here's a link to some build photos on the desinger's website: http://www.dhkurylko-yachtdesign.com/Aka_Pics.htm Your boat?

Thanks, Chuck. Yup, that's me. I took a stab at a build thread but got carried away trying to be entertaining. You can probably learn more just by looking at the pics on Don's website.:D
