View Full Version : I want a waterfall.

I don't ask for much in this life......It'd be nice to be pain free..... But I want a waterfall..... With bamboo, and Bougainvillea, and lizards scurrying about in the mottled sunlight. I want there to be Philodendrons, and Orchids, Parrots, King of-the-woods, and Vermillion flycatchers. I'd like it to have a deep cool pool at it's base, with big flat rocks along the edges, and a stream that winds it's way through a grassy meadow on it's way to a white sand beach, with Coconut Palms, Sea Almonds, and Figs.
It'd be nice if there was a rope so you could swing through the spray from the waterfall, and then plunge into the icy water in the pool, clamber shivering out, lay down on a hot flat rock for 5 minutes before swinging back through again.

Opiates kicking in? That almost sounds appealing.

Which? The opiates or the waterfall?

I had a friend I used to hike and camp with, she was always wanting to be right on the edge of someplace really high. She fell and went over this one day. It was really bad. :( She never really walked right again.

http://www.waterfallsusa.com/alnocc.jpg

She told me in the hospital that as she was trying to get to the bank after she had gone over that she kept reaching up and pushing this tree limb off of her shoulder, turned out that tree limb was her foot

Ohio, where I sprouted and lived until maybe my thirtieth year, has a lot of flowing water. Rocky River, which forms the western backbone of Cleveland's excellent park system, was a short walk or bike ride. A pretty good freshet in the springtime. No major falls that I know off, but a fair amount of altitude change.

Another favorite place is Hocking Hills State Park. Genuine falls there. Sandstone in the bedrock, and some of the falls had undercut it making caves. There were maybe a half dozen quite spectacular falls, maybe 150 to 200 feet height. One was called "Old Man's Cave" because a recluse lived their in the late 19th century. I can't remember his story, but maybe a Civil War veteran who'd gone a bit 'round the bend.

No bouganvillea, but plenty of mountain laurel, which when it's in bloom is good. Nice campgrounds. Worth a look if you're ever in that neck of the woods.

Gotta have Palm trees, Parrots, and no freakin' snow.....No frost even..... No heaters in the cars that crawl slowly by with their windows rolled down, unfamilliar music wafting out and away as they travel onward.....

"Wherever you go, there you are."

Buckaroo Banzai

I hear your lament. In my experience the "perfect place" hasn't been invented. The closest I've come was Mullett Lake in June. One exception might be the space between your ears. I've been working on that, and can't report back yet.

"The last frontier is between your ears."

Here ya go Leftie......
Back in the early/mid 50's I lived in Seminole, and would go visit aunts/uncles/grandparents near Davis. I had the pony and would disappear. The first few times they got a bit upset but then they were not so worriesome. Turner falls has been a state park for quite a while...but back then, there was absolutely none of the infrastructure you see in this photo. There was no sandy beach. It was fairly deep, clear, cold water pool and wilderness. If you really weren't from around there you didn't know it existed. Near the falls in the upper right there is/was a cave. It went back about 50-75 yards and had a fresh water spring at the back. Once it was an exit for the underground stream that the roof collapsed about a half mile upstream and rerouted to the bed you see today. Just above that cave entrance was another that went farther back, that had dried out and became a home for bats...my cousin and I used to camp there. Once in a while we would have a bear or coyote to visit, and we heard big cats though never saw one. The bears never bothered us, we didn't bother them....lotsa blackberries around. Then the tourists came, the made a dam, added sand....not a nice hiding place any more.

Paul: that's DeSoto, yes? Been there. I can't imagine how, well, I guess I CAN imagine how someone went over.

Doug: isn't this about the time that you and Ms. Carter go to Jamaica or some such place?

When you were talking about a waterfall I thought you meant a water feature for your beautiful property? I built one of those. Then the pump went down and I didn't fix it. And then it got filled with leaves. And then it was a mozzie breeding ground. And then I was trying to clear it all up and something long and slithery decided it didn't like me being near it. Freakin' scary, and I am not normally alarmed by snakeses.

Can't do anything about a waterfall or parrots, but here's something that might give you cheer: I think that I might be able to make the extravaganza in June, and if so I will bring you something that you add a little spark to your 4th o' July celebration, if you catch my drift. I will try to bring a little more than I did the last time.

You need to try self hypnosis. I have a beach that I frequent. Very private, very peaceful. No parrots but that's a good idea.

No parrots there, as I recall.
