I've had two in my life. You know what I'm talking about, the mom and pop.

Both were important, but let's start with Sproll's. Don Sproll had been injured during WW II, and walked with a cane many days. He limped, cane or no. Just a hop skip and a jump from our place, it was a place to buy candy and comix. A ramshackle frame building, with the US post office next door. That building was in rough shape, yet it had a set of wooden steps, that people gathered on, sorted their mail, ate popsicles, and looked at the day ahead. It was good.

I remember the local corner stores all sold cigarettes to kids, 2 for a nickel, half a pack for a quarter. Here they now sell beer and wine also, but no more selling to kids. Could you imagine if they'd sold booze back in those days? It would have been awful.
