Hey Forum Folks,
Our daughter has been in the hospital since the 25 of March. She developed a DVT,( Deep Vein Thrombosis) in her left leg. Her symptoms came on in the span of one and one half hours. Just an hour after being seen for a knee injury by her Orthopedist, who cleared her to play Rugby the following Monday.
She is in ICU and is now doing much better, but it was very touch and go. Mom and I have been doing watch on watch with her. Tomorrow she goes to Stanford Lucille Packard Children's Hospital for the placement of a stent in the vein where some clot remains.
She will never play Rugby again, but she may be able to keep riding horses. Hope to have her home with us this weekend. Thanks for your prayers. John

Wow! Glad all is going well, John. I usually think of this kind of thing as happening to older people.

Good thing the health care bill passed.
Good thing we have modern technology and good doctors.
Hope her recovery is smooth.
How did this thrombosis manifest? Pain? Were there any warning signs?
Maybe we could all learn something.

This seems to be one of those disorders that are becoming much more common than they used to be in the past. Sorry to hear that your family has been so afflicted, and sorry to hear that your Daughters life is constrained and will be different from here on in.
One of the good things though is that the DVT is a well understood medical issue, and that effective treatment is available and has only minor side effects.
Good luck,
John Welsford

Thanks Everyone. Hannah inherited a clotting disorder called Leiden factor V. It is a resistance to your own bodies blood thinners. You basically clot too easy. It appears that her DVT formed because of another factor called May-Thurner syndrome. The veins and arteries from your legs overlap each other where they join in the pelvis. This causes a slight narrowing of the vein from the left leg in some people because of the crowding. That is the May Thurner component. Added together this can cause a clot to develope if you have Leiden's and are subjected to any trauma. Well we all know that there isn't much bashing about in Rugby, yeah maybe a bit... She had a wonky knee from the bloody horses to begin with, so the Rugby injury was icing on the cake. A Godsend really, as she was planning to travel to Sweden in the summer to visit family. DVT is the reason they tell you to get up a walk about while in commercial aircraft. It is usually much worse if it happens on a plane as rapid intervention is key to treatment. We had her tested when she was younger. They said she didn't have it. Either the test was done wrong, or it develops with onset of puberty.
So symptoms to watch out for. Onset is sudden, with numbness and tingling throughout the whole limb. followed by swelling of the foot and ankle, hand or wrist, as veinous return is slowed or stopped. Her symptoms came on in the span of two hours. Skin may appear mottled. The Patient will have a great deal of anxiety that somthing is terribly wrong. Profound ANXIETY is a classic symptom of Pulmonary embolis also. Treatment for this is rapid diagnoses, with catheterization of the affected limb. She had a double lummen catheter put in behind her knee. The inner one is like a lawn soaker hose that leaks TPA, a clot disolving drug, and the outer is flushed with Heprin to prevent reformation of more clots. This will usually resolve the clot in 24-48 hours. Children are most at risk between the ages of 12 and 17. She will be 18 on the 20th of April. Leidens factor V is one of the causes of blood clots in women who take hormone based birth control. Hope this helps save someone else. Thanks agin. John

Best wishes for you, your daughter and your family.
Best wished for your daughter's continued and rapid recovery, John, and thank you for the lucid and detailed description of the ailment. My daughter is an active and athletic 19-y-o who is fortunately very healthy, but being forewarned is being forearmed...

Prayers and best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Shame about not being able to play rugby anymore. Maybe she can take up a safer sport, like motocross racing. ;)

Is there anything in this world a man loves more than his daughter (or in my case daughters)? As do so many here, I am gladdened to hear she is doing well, and send best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.
Daughters are the source of extreme joy.
I'll be saying a prayer for a continued & full recovery.

Glad to hear she is improving and they know about her coagulopathy issues. That is a real plus.
One of the often misunderstood issues I have with young women in my practice it the significant number of them that develop DVT/PE's due to smoking and even more commonly birth control pills. I have treated 2 doctor's wives even with stroke secondary to the pill, both very active women otherwise so no other risk factors.
Will keep praying for your daughter, I'd watch the horse deal too....

Best wishes and prayer from out here as well.
Thanks for the finer medical points .
Our son (14) emergency appendectomy a year ago. Three weeks ago a testicular torison. Both conditions went from a dull ache to a MAYDAY within an hour. Surgeries took place within two hours of MAYDAY . He made a full recovery very quickly. Had we been very far into the boonies or offshore it would have been a disaster.
We sure have top notch doctors in our humble town.
The nurses are the stuff of Chuck's daydreams, gorgeous , brilliant, dedicated, professionals. I'm married to the most gorgeous, brilliant, and dedicated one of the bunch, and that's just the fact of the matter.
We aren't spoiled either..... well, not too much anyways...

My daughter rides horses too. It can be a high impact pastime at times, keeps me permanently on edge. Once they're hooked they're hooked, I know better than to ever try to discourage her, but maybe, just perhaps, it would be possible and a good time to introduce her to the low/no impact pleasures of rowing a double sliding seat father/daughter built Saint Lawrence River Skiff? If I could wish her better she'd be skipping rope right now. Best wishes, keep your chin up mate.

Good news! Two and a half more hours on the table today, and the Docs think they got almost all of it. Placed a stent. She stood up tonight on her good leg first time out of bed in two weeks. Hope to have her home Friday. Thanks for the prayers everyone. John

My fiance had a DVT in her left leg about 10 years ago now. She had bad, non specific pain in the leg for a couple of days, her GP sent her home with Aspirin and no diagnosis of it. It took her mum (a nurse) taking her to hospital and insisting they check for a DVT to diagnose it, but teh damage to teh valve in her leg had been done.
Anyway, it damaged the valve in the bottom of her leg and she has to take several drugs and wear medical stockings for ever now. The stockings help do the work of the damaged valve, they keep some pressure in the leg so the return flow of blood pressurises a little, or something along those lines, it's particularly important when she sleeps or lays down for some time.
It's not permanently debilitating, but it is a constant nuisance with the drugs and stockings, plus annual checks with a specialist.
So, keep moving forward, it'll get much better with time!
Regards, Andrew.

Great News, she is coming home today. Yes with the fancy stockings, and shots, but alive. We will let the dogs play with her ALL BLACKS rugby ball, she is still captain and student coach for the team, but no more playing. The horse has to wait another six weeks. She will probably send him back to his owner as she won't have any time to train for the competitions she was going to sign up for. Horse is leased.
Interesting post script. During her stay at the hosiptal she got accepted to Texas A & M. She now wants to go into Pediatric ICU Nursing. Thank You all so much for your Prayers and Support. John

Excellent news John.
btw... when she settles in a bit, tell her I've got a rugby ball here signed by all members of the mighty victorious, all conquering 1991 World Cup winners... the mighty Wallabies. It seems I put my hand up at the appropriate time at a charity auction recently.
