A silly request, but does anyone know where I can buy one of those self centring centre punches for use with butt hinges ? My local hardware doesn't have them and either does the mail order outlet I usually deal with .

Yep ,that's the one but looking at it , I'll just turn one up on the lathe ...pretty simple isn't it ?
Thanks for the link .

One quick and dirty approach is to use a hand held countersink - and turn it backwards.

I seem to recall a bit of 1/2" brass round and a masonry nail in the workshop .

I had a girl give me a centre shot once. I recall she had a nasty left-hook too.

Peter, I have one here somewhere if you want to borrow one to copy but I reckon I got it at Trade Tools Direct in Darwin or Glenfords.

Never had much luck, even when I perfectly punched the center, the drilled hole always ended up off center.
I now swear by Vix Bits for mounting hardware.

Me too, although even they will wander occasionally.

Vix bits, absolutly. A center punch is for drilling holes in metal so the bit won't wander. For attaching hardware a vix bit is the way to go:

From the Jamestown catalog:
"Vix Bits are self-centering Drill Guides. Vix bits let you mount hinges the easy, professional way! Drill guides are most useful when mounting hardware such as hinges, handles, drawer slides etc. Using the drill guide insures the pilot hole will be located in the center of the hardware hole. Vix Bits make a tough job almost foolproof. The beveled self-aligning tip fits nicely into the hardware and is spring loaded so that once aligned the drilling pressure compresses the spring and extends the bit into the workpiece."
About 10 bucks.

I was wondering what that was for. Chuck (Paladin) gave me some tools and a tool box and it had several such tools of different types.
