Last fall we adopted a home-constructed Herman Oldenburger designed cruiser, brought her to the yard, tarped her, and waited for spring.
This weekend the weather was too nice to pass up, so we started to tear into our new project with gusto...and I got as far as the engine.
It's diesel, allegedly. Other than that, I think Sgt. Schultz said it best.
Can anybody tell me what I have here? Perkins? Cummins? Westerbeke? Detroit Diesel? Vin Diesel?

As always, thanks for the help.

Must be a brand name cast into it somewhere. Who'd cast an unidentified block?

You'd think, wouldn't you? It looks like there is something below the intake manifold, behind the throttle cable bracket, but i can't read it.

Not Detroit .
The exhaust manifold is a shop build from the look of it. It may be an industrial engine rigged for marine use.
You have a new injection pump there it seems. Probably for a good reason. Most of these pumps run forever on clean fuel. If it was mine I would check the tanks for moisture and crud very carefully. That wix filter is barely adequate for a tractor in my view. A good Racor will protect the fuel system much better than the wix.
Best guess is Perkins, Isuzu, Nissan, FWTW.
The boatdiesel site may have some engine pics.
How about the lowdown on the boat c/w some pictures?

Originally, according to a survey from 1977, the boat was powered by a marinized mercedes diesel, but the story i got from the PO who inherited the boat from his father was that she was repowered in 2002ish, but he was hazy on the details.

I just did a search on the PN of the WIX filter, and according to WIX the 33358 fits Cummins, Deutz, Volvo and Case, which sorta kinda narrows it down, maybe.

Hmm.... I still thought maybe one of the Nissan chrysler marine engines... the exhaust manifold looks like it, but who knows.

This is WHY the captain of any boat is supposed to keep a log book and records.
To NOT keep a log book and records of the boat is like a LAND LUBBER.
When you ask a land lubber where things are they just say, "I don't know."
Sorry but it makes me upset when someone does not keep any records.
