For those who recall the thread on Dr. John's St. Valery, thought you might like seeing the boat out for the first sail of the season. Dr. John has a new laptop and is anticipating joining in the forum as soon he a gets used to using it.

I think it is a beautiful boat, I would really like to hear more about her sailing characteristics. Tony

Boat balances well on main and fore. Jib on retractable bowsprit makes tacking easier. Main staysil fun to play with and adds more speed. Centerboard and rudder adequate for windward sailing. Comfortable tacking 50 degrees off wind. 760 lbs of bronze plates on bottom and 1200 lbs lead internal ballast make the boat relatively stiff. Rig is lots of fun to play with!

G'day doc, like a lot of people I blow hot and cold with Phil Bolgers designs but St Valery is one the finest in my opinion. I don't mind admitting that I have drooled over the plans in BDQ more than once. I won't even try to explain how to post pictures on the forum as I can barely do it myself but there are plenty of directions in previous posts but if you could post more pics especially the interior I for one would be most grateful. I can view it at work. Might be a problem with the file's name -- it contains spaces, which then have to be translated as "%20" -- always best to use underscores or dashes in place of spaces.
Looks very nice!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and photos. If you find the time to put up some more, it will surely be looked upon with interest and a lot of admiration.
Best wishes to all,
Mato

...760 lbs of bronze plates on bottom and 1200 lbs lead internal ballast...
Welcome aboard, John! Thanks for the information and pictures.
I'm interested in the approach you took to the ballast. Half inch bronze? What size of plates, attached how? Rolled to conform to the hull before attachment, presumably?
Did you add buoyancy [foam, tanks] to carry the additional 'dry' ballast? Any information or advice you can pass on would be gratefully received.
cheers
Derek
