Is a flat bottom power dory of say 22ft really such a bad ride over one with a semi vee? I recently went on an offshore trip on a 29ft pro line cuddy cabin boat and there was about a 3ft chop on the way home and this was a gut pounding ride and this boat has quite a draft and a substantial vee. The proline is a wide boat with the beam seeming to exceed 8ft. Has anyone here used a dory extensively for offshore fishing?

It depends how fast you go. My flat bottom boat doesn't pound much in normal conditions at cruising speed of 15 knots. In rough conditions, I slow down to 10-12 knots for a better ride. I wouldn't normally want to go faster than 15 knots with a flat bottom boat.

Another thing, when waves coincide with the natural frequency of your boat, it will pound or at least have an extremely wet and rough ride. This happens even with substantial deadrise. When this happens, alter course until the ride is better.
