I work from my home these days, so I often have time for a long leisurely breakfast. My practice on such occasions is to go to the cupboard where I keep the collection of Woodenboat past issues and choose one at random to savour along with the food.

This morning I picked up Number 97, the Nov/Dec 1990 issue. On page 92 there is an article, written by the late Phil Bolger, titled Alice: An echo from a time of innocence. As you can see below, Alice is a real charmer. She is the sort of power vessel I would own if I wanted to switch from sail. She is simple, elegant, and quite lovely.

Mr. Bolger's writing is superb. His thoughts flow from past to present to future in a gentle sweep. He can see and express the vessels roots, and he easily envisions what will happen to her in ten years, in thirty and in fifty.

In recent months we had Mr. Bolger's partner, Susanne Altenburger, on the Forum, with disappointing results. A few of us, myself included, crossed swords with her, with no useful outcome. I was sorry about that then, and now I'm sorrier still. I would very much like to have the full plans for Alice, so I'll have to swallow my feelings and make contact with Suzanne, hoping the plans are available.

A quick net search tells me that Alice is included in "Boats with an open mind", a book that I don't have now, but will have by tomorrow.

You won't be the least bit disappointed in BWAOM. There's lots of neat boats with unconventional design ideas.
