I was prowling marinas last weekend (too rainy to work on the boat) and I saw what I thought might be a S&S weekender (or maybe not, what do I know?) Anyone know what it is?

Lulworth,

If I ain't mistaken, (never happens, honest), that looks like a Hinckley "Talaria" (restricted, copyrighted, trademarked, etc...) up on the bow.

The S&S, Hinckley Sou'Wester, and numerous others, all used an S&S design about the same time. How long is she and is that a Talaria?

Looks just like our Hinckley Sou'wester 34.

(FYI, a Talaria is a semicircle with 3 lines drawn horizontally out of the open side and the top of the semicircle extended tangent to the shear all the way aft and forward). Concordia had the sun and moon, Hinckley put on 2 Talarias. I wonder if Lawley had a shearline logo. Easiest way to tell if it's a Hinckley anyway.

When I see Ed's boat, she reminds me of our Saga with 6 extra feet. So similar.

Geez, more I look, more I'm convinced. Looks like a talaria on the stern as well. Not to mention the bow hardware and a few other little things.

Good luck,
Matt

And the prize goes to Matt. Very nice ID job and thanks for the sheerline logo info ... it is going to make me sound like an expert next time I see a Hinckley. (Though to avoid revealing the truth I'll have to keep my mouth shut after I make a show of squinting down the shear line and pondering the body profile then pronouncing it's a Hinckley)! I was wondering what that thingy was on the shear. Now I know, Hinckley Talaria. The boat looks to me like it's 35-ish feet long so maybe it can be narrowed down to an s&s designed sou'wester built by Hinckley. Would that be in the late 50's early 60's?

By the way, I saw a large Yawl recently (no pictures, we were sailing and our paths crossed only briefly with a single (fairly large) star logo at the bow end of the shear line. Any idea's?

Thanks again,

David.

Dave,
I think the design seems to have been built from the mid 40's to sometime in the 50's. But I am speaking with no knowledge - i.e., I've seen several boats all built then to that design, but that's all I know.

The original design was by S&S. Then it was sold apparently to other builders / designers who modified it, produced it, and called it their own. Met a fella in Baltimore with a beautiful boat - really caught my eye. Said our Hinckley was a poor design built by a lousy builder :D and his was built by a respectable builder in the midwest to a - hold your breath before the pedigree is revealed - S&S design. I told him it was the same design, and he didn't beleive me. Oh well, still a real nice guy and a beautiful boat, and yes, he padded the blow to the best of his abilities - beat way around the bush to tell me that.

The yawl with a star sounds like a Concordia. Was she beautiful? smile.gif

So I was right, huh? Can't wait to tell Jenny about my day at the forum... I mean work.

Matt
