experience? thoughts. I have a clinker built boat. what should I paint it with. the copper stuff is too poisonous for my liking. even with a respirator I get sick.
what should I use?
Nothing, haul her out once in a while and wash with javex. Kills everything but no residual effect.

If you keep a boat in, you'll need anti-fouling. There's a new stuff out that is an ablative (sloughing) paint that works by emiting a little hydrogen peroxide, that rapidly breaks down in solution. Quite effecting for me this last year. Not terribly obnoxious to apply though the yard pros, even using this safer stuff, use respirators as they may be doing dozens of boats. For an owner doing just one boat, a simple mask and working outdoors is safe, like almost any paint.

yum... that sounds like a good recipe for some chinook salmon.
A marina neighbor tried sprinkling some ground Jalapeno pepper to keep otters away... doesn't work, but it does make them sneeze.
I'll stick with copper oxide bottom paints anytime. Not that toxic.

yeah... they aren't that bad... in comparison to some places where they are full of biocide and such. That is what freaks me out, I am pretty sensitive to chemicals after five years of boat work and I try to steer clear as much as I can.
Environmentally friendly bottom paint.
Isnt that an oxymoron?

This stuff is suppose to be environmentally friendly and have non-toxic fumes. It's a waterbase ablative and comes in a bunch of different colors. I assume you can get it up there but I don't know.

Google "Coppercoat". It's epoxy resin thickened with copper powder. I heard somewhere that Gougeon Bros. sells copper powder for mixing your own. The boat would have to be cleaned down to bare DRY wood, of coarse, and it would not be likely to stick to seam compound. Should be excellent over cold molded or strip planking. I expect that you would want to haul the boat and sand it a bit from time to time to expose new copper. Probably the least harmful way to do the job.
