View Full Version : Storm Damage: Broken Boom

Fierce Storm Wreaks Havoc. The bow and spring lines parted. She swung out on the stern line. Pitching in a sea (in the harbor!) and storm surge brought the mizzen boom down on top of a piling. Snapped at the sheet bail. The broken boom did some other harm. The break is pretty neat. I believe the boom is Douglas Fir. I plan to scarf a piece on either side, kind of clothespin style. Anyone done this?

I've done it to masts booms and bowsprits. 12:1 minimum.. good to go.;)

Bring it around if you want a hand with it, John.
That was quite a wind and I'm sure the North shore got the worst of it.

Thanks Jim. Richard Jones made a similar offer today. The crew at the yard told me there were 3' seas in the harbor. I understand nine people were killed.
Thank you John.

You could use a clothes pin scarf. Call if you need help. I've got some d. fir and some black spruce handy.

Sounds like rather than repairing broken booms and building catboats you fellas should be starting in on an ark!

I'm planning on scarfing dutchmen on both sides, their apexes meeting at the break. I'll check out the local yard to see if I can find good fir(tight grain, no flaws). The boom is rectangular, should be ok.
Thanks Roger.

John,
Back in the early 90's when I was building my gaff pilot sloop, I got some nice clear 5/4 doug fir out at Riverhead Building Supply for my mast. Also some Sitka Spruce. Don't know if they still carry it.
