Some kind soul has given us a spinnaker, but there's just one problem: I must now make a spinnaker sock. I understand how to sew it, but what I don't understand is what material is best. Sailrite recommends a polyester mesh fabric, but I've also seen them made of ripstop. Is there something wrong with ripstop? Only reason I ask is that I have a lot of ripstop (from another donated spinnaker) and could turn it into the sock rather than buy new fabric. I think the problem with ripstop may have to do with the spinnaker not drying out inside a ripstop sock/sleeve. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Kitty

I have used knotless mesh of the type used by fishermen for keepnets with no problem.I also had a boat that used a sailbag which had been altered by the addition of three or four eyes for drainage. That worked too and had the advantage of a drawstring that was ideal for attaching the sock tothe end of the chute moulding.

Ripstop would be fine. The original "Chutescoop" was not mesh. (I used to work for the guy who invented it. He worked for the patent office so he was prohibited from patenting his invention, all he could do was file a public disclosure so that no one else could patent it either)
