Wonderful! (will be curious to see how much original material remains when they are done.)

will be curious to see how much original material remains when they are doneNot much, if any. . .

Probably just enough, for the claim to be made that she's an original boat that's been restored instead of a new build. I spoke to the owner about a year or so ago, and he was pretty realistic that every major structure (backbone, framing, planking, deck and house) would have to be completely rebuilt. She's been rebuilt twice before - once after a fire completely gutted her. So in the end, don't be surprised if just her lead keel is reused. . .

Can someone take a second here and tell me what this original material fixation is all about?
I don't know everything about anything, but considering how the deal is material, not technique or skill level, I happen to feel better off with newer material that older, especially if the material is prone to degradation.

It will be very nice if Fame is restored to her original layout, sail plan, etc.

I hope she won't get modern sails.

is Cotton Blossom original?

Whatever comes of the process, the outcome oughtta be spectacular. Cotton Blossom was apparently finished like a Steinway piano. Dennis C. does not cut corners.

DC will do what he does with all of these boats. It's an investment, and he has once again created a little cottage industry for himself by restoring, sailing, and selling these classics. He won't have this boat but a year or two, but she will be a lot better off for him having owned her. My only problem with it is that she will probably wind up in the Med when it's all said and done.

All the nice boats go to the med. Americans have become too poor to own nice boats.

Quite possible. But I suspect the "Med migration" is just a 'pendulum swing' phenomenon. For what I'm sure are all the classical socioeconomic reasons that have come and gone for generations (and will continue to do so), the Med is the world's hot spot and high profile stage for 'classic yachting' at the moment. It's been other places in the past. Someday it may well be Hong Kong or Shanghai! But as long as the boats are well cared for, they'll be around. You just have to save your pennies and when the time is right, you'll be able to buy, say, Lulworth for 50 cents on the dollar! Just think about it, a ten million dollar savings! The bilge is half empty, not half full...

I was at a Finn regatta awhile back and a Brit was sitting next to me talking on the phone with his wife. He was laughing about how cheap everything was in the US (in New Orleans, to be specific). As long as the dollar is getting pounded on the exchange rate it is the sky's the limit for any Euro who wants to bring back a boat from the US. The only sticking point being the VAT. I am not sure how VAT works for a classic or older sailboat that you want to import into Europe. Maybe someone here will elaborate?

Easy: 19.6 % (In France) on the boat value (established by the custom) + the shipping cost.
For recent boats, the problem is to comply to EU safety regulation if you want a EU flag.

But if you keep the US flag, or get a non EU flag, you "just" have to pay the VAT...
