Anyone ever build a Walter Baron designed Lumber Yard Skiff and want to converse? I am building a 20 footer and I can honestly say it is going well for my first boat. Plans are accurate and he supplies a nice little narrative on how to build it. He even sent in progress pictures.

I'm deviating from the plans of course! My deviation is to fiberglass sheath the exterior and I'm adding a shear deck ala Tracy Obrien Predator heritage. I will build it center console, open cockpit.

It is upside down now in the garage and has the bottom on it and I just started the exterior sheathing today. It looks like it will ride well enough. I plan on putting a 40 or 50 hp 4 stroke on her unless you all have other ideas for me.

If I were to do it again I would scarf the plywood instead of butt joining them. I live in WV and have a hard time getting marine ply so I said "to heck with it" and bought a bunch of 3/4" BC exterior from Lowe's and went to work. I have a piece of it in the bed of my truck to see what happens over time to it in the raw. I first boiled it and froze it then took it out and threw it in my truck. It has not even started to show signs of delam. All told, right now I have about $450 in wood into this but I also bought a 5 gal jub of System Three epoxy and a 2-1/2 gal jug of hardener. By the way, I'm IN LOVE with System Three - I've never used it before and I like it better than West System because I find it mixes like butter and works superbly. I am amazed at how strong AND flexible this stuff is. Just like they say in their product literature.

Anyway, if anyone has ever built one of these Lumber Yard Skiffs I'd love to hear from you and perhaps see some photos and hear how you like it in a sea.

Another LYS builder :D this will be cool. I am building a 16 ft LYSS (Sport Skiff-a little more rocker and flare.)Just tacked together side No. 1 yesterday. Hope to have both sides and transom done today. I'm taking a vacation over the new year and hope to finish the thing in a week.
I too am deviating fromt the plabns as I plan to glass the outside as well. You shouldn't worry aboutusing non-marine plywood. Its caled a lumber yard skiff for a reason. Abd that's why you use 3/4 or in my case 5/8-- but I am using underlayment play as ccalled for in the plans.

I was thinking of building the chines with two layers of white pine boards--anyone have any thoughts? It would mean reliance on glue.

Which by the way is my other big change. I'm using construction Polyurethane adehsive in stead of sikaflex ($2.50 vs. $11.00 each)-- Although I might use some thickend epoxy to glue the chines to the bottom.
I also will be reinforcing the but joint on the outside. I might just put a piece of 24 oz biaxl over it (might do the whole side in it actually) or may even grind out a hollow and fill with epoxy paste) I think Payson wrote the article on this I am thinking of from a WoodenBoat book.

Look forward to conversing. Will post pictures soon.

So where do yaall step the mast? Otherwise it looks like a dandy project. I hope you'll have your discussions here.

Best wishes, and send pictures.

Hi Loon,

I have been diligently working on my little Lumber Yard Skiff. If you recall, I sent you an email a long while back asking for a full size shot of your Loon as I was (still am) entralled by her cabin design. I was going to modify that for a Predator I was building (Tracy O'Brien design). However, I got realistic when I develoed my spreadsheet of costs and I went with the Walter Baron Lumber Yard Skiff instead and I haven't looked back since. I'm now at the point where I have a hull upside down in my father in law's garage. I've sheathed her and epoxy coated. I'm waiting for my System Three paint to arrive. Once I get her painted over she goes and I'll be able to do my interior woodwork. I've already got the center console and foward seat/lazarette built and epoxy coated. I can't wait to do that roll over. It will be a boat soon enough. This is turning out to be a SUPERB project for me to learn by. Eventually (not sure when) but I'll build a larger cabin boat, something in the 23 ft + range but still trailerable and able to pull behind a Toyota truck with 6 cylinder. For now though, I'm gonna be on the water for spring!!

You mention posting pictures. Can you give me a shorthand method for how to do that on this site. Eventually I'm going to have to show a nice launching photo at the very least!!!!
