Hello,

Hopefully this is a silly question, Is there an easy way to tell the difference between single or two pack paint? I am about to repaint around a pit, Sanding back the top layer I get to a glass/dynel sheeth which has paint, 'in it' so I need to establish what type it is before repainting.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated,
Cheers,
Alex

You might ask a paint manufacturer. Try the Awlgrip or Interlux tech support lines. There might be solvent tests that'd tell the difference. The two-part stuff is glossier, tougher, thinner and smells different when scraped or sanded.

Good idea Jim,

I just called the folks at Hempel and discussed it with them. For interest they said to use a xylene based thinner, rub a patch of the paint. An enamel will loose its colour as it redisolves in the solvent whereas a two pack system will not. This test does not necessarily account for acrylic paints.
