Joe McGlasson

Can anyone give me any information on a Designer/Builder by the name of Joe McGlasson? I believe he is from The Portland Oregon area.

I used to work for a Joe McGlasson at Cape Foulweather Boats in Newport Oregon in 1976. It sounds like it could be the same guy i worked for although i haven't seen him since those days.I don't know that I could help you with any current info, what kind of info were you looking for?

I am currently looking at a McGlasson 40 Pilothouse Cutter that was designed and built by Joe McGlasson and am wondering what kind of reputation and or credentials he has. How many boats has he designed and how many built and how do they handle etc. ?

What year is the boat and what type of construction? From what I can recall he had a connection to the the fiberglass islander line of boats built in So. California. He left them and started building wood boats at Cape Foulweather.His boats had nice lines but i never sailed on any of them. He must have had a good reputation as we were building and repairing for some well known customers.I was associated more with the building and repairs and not with the sales end of it. From the building side of his shop he was not one to push his crew for production but rather spend the time and get it right,He seemed to know all phases of construction from design to finish. Personally I think he is out of the business because he spent to much time and materials to get a given boat out of the door. I have a newspaper article on his shop i will try to find and see if that can give you more detail.

Thanks for your reply. Sounds interesting. The boat is a 1980 Pilothouse cutter. She is yellow cedar on white oak. I haven't actually seen her yet but am going to look at her tommorrow. She has been on the hard for three and a half years though so I am a bit worried about what that has done to the hull.

I'm sorry I cannot find the article on Joe McGlasson, if you would like to research it the newspaper in Corvalis Oregon did the article sometime during June-Sept. in 1976.
Again I'm sorry I could not help with more information.
