do you fellers think alaskan yellow cedar, tight-ringed with no knots would be good for some 8-9 ft. oars? i saw another poster here who was using it for same, and i found some the other day for about $2 a board foot....i don't know if the numbers will work out to be better than spruce but...

well I made a pair from clear AYC to Iaign Oughtred's design that came with my Elfyn plans and I love them. Recently made another pair to use when I row with my son and used the more traditionally recommended sitka spruce, and near as I can tell with my inaccurate scale they weigh the same and perform the same.

And the AYC is much nicer to work with - no splinters!

In fact I've been wondering about using it for spars?

I would say go for it, especilally at that price.

$2/bd. ft?????? Grab it! When I was pricing AYC planks for my boat (originally planked in AYC), I was getting quoted 15+. I ended up buying Port Orford, which seems close to AYC. AYC was the US Navy's preferred wood for all wood craft.

Bet it'd make nice strong oars, but it does stink when working it....

I like yellow cedar just fine for oars. Because it is relatively soft (just like spruce) you will want to be sure to have nice, thick leathers.
