Good Evening Folks,

A gentleman walked into the shop today, wants us to build him a lapstrake moterboat in the 20-23 foot range. He wants to use it for fishing mostly. I believe he wants it to have a small cabin....Any ideas on designs? Thanks!

Here's one of my favorites, that I may eventually build for myself; John Atkin's "Russell R." (http://www.boat-links.com/Atkinco/Oar/RussellR.html) 21' x 6' x 8" draft with the motor up, lapstrake sides, cross-planked bottom in the old style (although plywood might be better today if he'll keep it on a trailer), motor in a well. Atkin claims 17 mph with 12 HP. There's a slightly larger inboard version with a cuddy called "Little Effort". If this doesn't suit, look through the Atkins' web site; they have a lot of very nice powerboat designs.

Call Paul Gartside and ask him to design new/adapt an existing design for lapstrake planking?

Pete Cullers book has two excellent lapstrake outboard hulls, one 24 x 7 feet, the other 30 x 8 feet. Hard chine, sides lapstrake bottom planked. Look pretty easy to build apart from the bow, but really pretty boats

Our own forumite Thad is building just what you are looking for one of his customers. It looks like the boat Martin is working on in this thread: part 1 (http://www.woodenboat-ubb.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=6;t=003878) and part 2 (http://www.woodenboat-ubb.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=6;t=003882)

Maybe it's on his website or at least some contact info will be: www.reddspondboatworks.com (http://www.reddspondboatworks.com)

If you are talking about a boat for near shore fishing off the coast, I would look at a modified V design with beam and adequate freeboard. A nice example of this type is the CC Cavalier Cutlass. This is plywood lapstrake 22' IB boat with moderate V hull, and enough freeboard and flair forward for a dry ride. In BC, you would probably want some canvas.

I'll second that CC Cutlass design. They are great.

Another suggestion is the Eldredge McInniss 25' Bassboat (also built in 24' length) which has been built lapstrake. Plans available from WB Store.

Brahm, from what I uderstand from talking to Tom Koroknay aka "Dr. Lyman", plans for the Lyman are not available at this time, however; I think if the price was right and enough people were interested a certain model (I want plans for the 13'), he'd probably get something together.

Hell, I'd be happy just for the offsets scribbled on a old, dirty napkin...

Here's the definitive site on Lyman boats.
