the suit was reasonable at the warehouse of men but the accessories floored me. The tailoring seemed reasonable also, but was a cost I had forgotten about walking in.

dark grey, very boring.

so $500 for a suit, shirt, tie, pocket square, suspenders and tailoring. Is that sensible?

Where i live in Alabama, there is a thrift store where the occasional Harris Tweed jacket shows up among the suits for $5 - $10. Almost all (suits too) in excellent condition. Just another option.

Damn...I woulda given you a couple or three...am saving one to bury me in...I stopped wearing suits 5 years ago...have a dozen hanging in the closet, about as many sports outfits and a couple tuxes/dinner jackets...
Jeans, "T" shirts and sneakers is now my uniform of the day. When I had to wear a suit to work and keep a fresh one in the office in case of congress critter "guests" I decided it was time to retire.

$500 less accessories is a cheap suit. Tailoring and fit count for a lot--below is a link to a site that seems to cover most of what I remember about the details. (It's been a number of years since I wore one regularly; I dread most of the special occasions, now.)

Strive for (cover Norm's eyes, I don't want him to see this) the Bill Clinton look: he's a pretty sharp dresser.

I an 6 feet tall, 170 # I went to the Men's Wearhouse last May. Nice ( I mean Nice ) Two piece suit. I asked them to throw in a shirt. They sed no, I sed how bout a tie if I buy a shirt? They sed 'deal.' Little tiny Chinese chick grabbed my assansed, 'we take in a little here.' Total Bill: $498.53
Went to a wedding. Met this girl. She is moving from Michigan in June to sleep by my side for the rest of our days.
Best $500.00 I ever spent. I guarantee it.

If you've got time check out Ebay. I regularly buy HartMarx and other $800+ suits for less than $100. You've got to understand what your measurements are and might have to spend a few dollars at a tailor when you get it but I've yet to be disappointed. I've bought few ties too - never any shirts.

If you're careful and patient, you can find good suits in thrift stores. The key is to find what you want and then get it tailored. Most guys do not wear out suits. They *outgrow* them or die

The key is the tailoring

Not necessarily. Thrift store shopping can take time. When's the wedding?

(Cheap=inexpensive, doesn't need to imply inferior.)

I usually find a nice suit for $15-$25 at the local thrift store. For my own wedding my mother insisted that I wear a new one, so I suggested she could buy it...... She did. :D

suspenders...... Is that sensible?

Yeah.... a good woman in suspenders looks real nice. Other than that, suspenders don't - unless they are with tails and topper. Damn kids seem to have lost my topper.
