From the Canaries, what kind of tack/ sail/ rig is this??? You'll need to hang in for a little while to see what I mean.

That's a new one...in some ways similar to a lateen rig, but in other ways quite different.

A little under-canvased and under-crewed don't you think? :D

Great footage and music, some pretty hand crew work there as well.,

It's a evolution from a normal loose footed lateen. Looking not very handy, shifting the long "gaff" to the leeward side of the mast to become a clear, undisturbed airflow over the important lee side of the sail.

Look at the crew hauling the backstays and the poor guy at the main sheet!!!!!!!!

Great fun to look at!

That would be a "Dipping Lug" with leading edge that has become so vestigial with evolution to increase speed that only about a foot of cloth unsupported by the gaff prevents it from being a lateen.

Very cool boats

Yup...gotta agree with that. NOT your single hander rig there. I figure there is over a half ton of beef on the rail ...

Lovely video. They are certainly sailing on the edge there. I wonder how often they go over. Tacking sure does take a lot of coordination. Pretty amazing how fast they shift the sail around the mast when coming about.

Sure looks like one heck of a lot of fun!!!

This appears to be a "Settee" rig, although the freestanding luff is so vestigial as to make the sail almost indistinguishable from the usual lateen.

As with the lateen and lugsails, the spar is a yard, not a gaff.

No, as I stated above in post #3, it is a Canarian Lateen. It's one of those localized sail types that has been somewhat standardized for racing in that area.

I like those straps that they hang off of for hiking.

When the middle son was young, he would talk about the spot where moving air touched water. He would say that if you put a boat into that spot, then that is sailing.
So simple.
